It has almost been three months since the amputation and Zip is not continuing to progress very much. She got taken to the emergency clinic this morning because she was so unable to get up and stay up. We were terrified that she had more cancer in her remaining back leg but the radiographs said no which thrilled us. Now, what do we have going on?

She has been off the treadmill since last Monday but still having her stretches being done everyday. This is 2 1/2 weeks since last chemo so her blood count is probably low and we know her BUN is high and those meds are being adjusted. Has anyone else gone through a similar episode? Maybe pulled a muscle somehow, we are baffled.

Her attitude still seems good and so is her appetite and she is so stoic we can't tell if she is in pain. Going back to the rehab and pain management vet on Thursday but that is a long time in puppy-worried mode.

Trouble went through a short period of this.  She was fine that morning and in the afternoon she simply refused to get up.  I gave her Tramadol and waited, still nothing.  Watched her for another couple hours and gave her another Tramadol, still nothing.  I paniced and rushed her to the vet.  He found nothing wrong, put her on Remadyl for a few days and continued the Tramadol.  The next day she still wouldn't go out when I got up.  By the time I got home, she was ready to get up on her own.  One more day and she was fine.

The point is to try not to panic yet.  Get some medicaiton down him and see if there is improvement.

we havent had anything like this exactly with Cooper, and he is not on chemo so dont know how all that plays in, we have seen days where he seems super strong , and then days that he seems to have no will or that he is getting weaker, sometimes I think he just has very sore muscles, he never had what I would call muscle tone and in the 4 weeks since his surgeries I am feeling huge areas of muscle growing all down his left side, Im sure some days it just seems like a lot for them. I would definitely say the good attitude and appetite are always good signs. We will sure keep Zip and all of you in our thoughts and prayers!

I dont have any answers or suggestions but I just want to send my regards and hope Zip just has muscle fatigue.

Have you tried a heating pad on Zips' neck and back and/or muscle massages?

Best wishes!

Thanks all. It is so hard not to panic when you watch them struggle with something they were recently doing but all panic does is deprive you of joy but....aahhhhh! We are still massaging, warm packs and resting. Today is supposed to be a water treadmill day but we will see what the PT has to say and then we will make a choice. Maybe she will be much better this morning when she gets up, always hopeful. I shall remind Zip that one of her dog heros went through this so she needs to follow suit and get better. Trouble, are you still doing chemo?

No, Trouble finished her chemo in March/2009.  Her incident was totally unrelated to chemo and blood count.  I think she hurt herself earlier in the day the day it happened.  She had been laying outside enjoying the sun and something scared her, she scrambled around to get up and move quickly and must have pulled something.  It was such a small thing, it took me a while to piece the two events together.

Zip, I'm not sure what it could be, but I hope it's nothing serious. What a relief that the rads were clear! Be sure to celebrate that victory OK?

You are definitely getting the best care pawsible, and I know your folks will do all they can to help you feel better. Hang in there, we know you can get past this setback.

xoxo

hey Zip

I feel very fortunate that Kess hasn't had to deal with chemo.  I don't have any experience on the topic, but a friend of mine used to give her dog a dollop of cottage cheese (or yogurt) with a tsp of honey on it and said it always seemed to pep up her pup after chemo.  I also saw it recommended in one of my natural pet books, but again I don't have any personal experience.

Kess had her right rear leg amputated and I have noticed some swelling and soreness in Kess's back from having to hop on only one leg, particularly first thing in the morning and late at night.  So you might try more of a back massage.

Glad to hear there was no cancer in your other leg.  Hopefully you'll be back on your feet soon.  Sounds like your mom's taking good care of you.
