Hello All,

My Sadie has been doing great. She's 8 months post amp and has completed chemo and still on palladia 3 days per week and has been a champ. We are so proud. This morning her back leg started cramping. The muscle was extremely tight and we messaged her and had her rest. She doesn't seem to be doing bad, just cramping. She's a front amp and it's the back leg on her amp side. Anyone have experience with this or any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Brian

Hi Brian! First of all YAY for Sadie! That's SO great to hear she's doing well otherwise!

Think back to the activity she's had lately, has she had any extra exercise that might have contributed to this? Maybe taking advantage of great summer weather has caught up with her? What does her daily exercise / routine look like?

Usually a few days of R&R, some pain relief like a NSAID (if your vet approves) and restarting activity slow and cautiously will help tremendously. Her back leg is probably sore because it's doing all the work of compensating for the missing front leg. Kind of like how humans walk with a limp when our back  hurts, then our leg starts to hurt because we're not using it properly. Make sense?

If R&R doesn't help, some PT with a rehab vet will do wonders. Please keep us posted OK?

We did have some tightness with our remaining rear leg. It takes effort to use those muscles differently. Definitely did some massage work to ease it up. And I would agree - a PT would be great and could give you some ideas for other care.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

This is something Jerry posted a while back in DDJACK's post when she was having muscle spasms. Don't know if it would applymir not in Sadie's case.

"Methocarbamol Overview

A muscle relaxant drug is the best option for combating regular muscle spasm problems. Methocarbamol, also know by the brand name drug Robaxin V, is a powerful muscle relaxant. It is not completely understood why this drug works to prevent your pet's muscles from spasming, but it is highly effective.

When selecting the brand name drug Robaxin for your dog, note that there are two types available. The standard formulation of Robaxin is designed for use in humans and contains a slightly different chemical makeup and dosage than the standard Robaxin for dogs. The veterinary version of the medicine is technically called Robaxin-V. Do not provide your pet with the human formulation.
