We recently adopted a loving 3-5 yr old adorable pooch who had an apparent history of horrid abuse. (Was dumped at a shelter with a months-old untreated femur fracture, had a healed but crooked tail fracture, and whatever else happened to him) . He was saved from the shelter by a wonderful rescue organization and a loving foster Mom before we got him. After consulting with several orthopedic surgeons, we proceeded with amputation of the leg due to the low likelihood of successful reconstruction based on the condition. He was hopping around only for brief potty excursions day 2 postop when he let out a shreik and collapsed, unable to walk on the remaining rear leg. After 3 weeks of cold laser, rest etc conservative treatment, he is now post op lateral suture blown CCL and meniscus tear repair. He is remaining hospitalized in a tertiary referral/ rehab hospital for initial healing and rehabilitation since he literally doesn't have a leg to stand on right now, and to keep him safest. (Our other dog wants to play!) I wanted to share my story and am wondering if there are any other tripawd members who have had a rear amp have to have surgery on the remaining back leg. Any insight is welcome due to the challenges. We do have a "babygate playpen" set up with a rug in it as he cannot be crated (goes ballistic- must have been shoved in a small one for inordinate periods of time as part of his former abuse). We've already been seeing a certified therapist athough he had only had cold laser before and after his first (amp) surgery with her so far, but she'll be able to do pool etc later. Massage and range of motion will be tough because of his history- he is hypervigilant with any attempts at touching his whole back half. I also need anti-floor slip advice. We have 3600 sqft hardwood floor house and can't have rugs (to trip my 90 year old shuffling mom. ...) Does that glue-sand paw stuff work? He pulled off the socks.....nails and between pad fur were clipped under sedation....

Hi Cam's mom, welcome. Thanks for joining. What a story he has! Wow. I'm sorry about the injury but it sounds like he is getting incredible care that should get him on the road to good health soon.

am wondering if there are any other tripawd members who have had a rear amp have to have surgery on the remaining back leg

Ask and you shall receive 😉

What to Know About Remaining Limb Surgery on a Tripawd

Regarding the carpet runners....oh that is a tough situation. I know exactly what you mean as we recently had to take all runners out of my folk's house. Now whenever we visit with Wyatt Ray we have to bring along traction . The way we do it is with Paw Friction. Yes, it works great, but not for very long because he is quite an active dog so it wears off sooner than it would for the intended customer, an older, less mobile pup. Sounds like Cam is going to be an active guy when this is all over so you may not be happy with it, however it may work well during his recovery days.

Boots are not real practical every day either, as we humans tend to forget to put them on. Plus, many dogs just won't tolerate them. Cam is a long way off from testing them, I'm guessing.

Any other traction products are generally a daily application type of thing.

Meanwhile there really aren't any good options I can think of other than very low, low profile runners glued down along his favorite paths through the house. I know that telling your mom not to walk on them probably won't work (it wouldn't for my own parents), so honestly I'm not really sure what to do here. Hopefully some other people here who have dealt with seniors and Tripawds in the same house can chime in. Sorry, I wish I had better input in that department.

First of all.... you are amazing for adopting a special needs pup. Most people always want the “perfect” dog from the shelter and the special needs ones often get over looked. We as people are far from perfect so why do we expect our dogs to be. I wanted to chime in about the rugs. My Golden is a front amputee and my whole house is wood floors. I knew that runners wouldnt work since my other dog thinks hes a race car and would constant disrupt them. So i got stick down carpet tiles. The toles are 2ftx2ft and have adhesive on the back. They are very low profile and you can arrange them however you need. You can even cut them to fit. After a while the adhesive seems to wear off so I got carpet tape off Amazon to stick them back down. My Pitbull hasnt been able to move them. The carpet tiles came from Home Depot and werent that expensive. Might be worth a try. I hope your pup is doing well. Sending positive thoughts your way 🐶

Hello and welcome.

Congrats on your new pack member but I'm sorry Cam is facing such challenges.

I wanted to give you a direct link to Murphy's Story because it is close to what you are dealing with, although a hip replacement instead of knee surgery.  I'm sure it's in the links that Jerry gave you above.

Neither of my two little rescue dogs can be put in a crate- I understand that.  And my rear Tripawd Elly, who was hit by a car at 7 months old, didn't like her back end being touched at all when I first adopted her. She even would freak out if I let her leash touch her back. She is better now, almost 3 years later...I know that doesn't help you now but you might try working with him now to help in the future.

I get the carpet issue also- I live with my elderly father so I can't have as many rugs on the tile as I would like.  For Cam's recovery time maybe you can set up a room or area with good traction that your mom doesn't go in.  When my quad pug Obie was recovering from his knee surgeries I made him a little ex-pen enclosure with a rug.  After the first week post knee surgery he was allowed to walk a little bit around the house but only on a leash.  Elly has learned to go slow on the tile and goes from rug to rug- she even avoids going through the kitchen most of the time and goes the long way through the carpeted living room.

When my last Pug Tani was having mobility issues I used yoga mats held down with carpet tape.  Very low profile- maybe that would work?

What kind of dog/mix is Cam?  How big is he?  I used a RuffWear WebMaster harness with Obie during his knee surgery recovery, it was very helpful supporting most of his weight.  Elly wears her's whenever we leave the house.
