My Rottweiler went into surgery weighing 105 (and was carrying too much weight).  Left hospital 94. First chemo at 3 weeks out 86 lbs. Next chemo 3 weeks later 84 lbs.  Docs don't want her to gain to help with supporting weight on 3 legs (hers was a rear leg amputation).  My concern is the speed she is losing.  Is this "normal".  She has a great appetite.

I believe 3-5% body weight loss per month is considered safe for dogs. It seems like the initial weight loss was a lot but then some of that was the leg. The second loss was a little high for the first chemo treatment but the next loss was in the acceptable range. I know it's unsafe for cats to lose weight too quickly. If your dog has lost more weight again at the next treatment, you can discuss it with the vet if you are still concerned.

I hope your rottie is doing well in her recovery.

Wow! Well first off, congratulations on a good recovery and helping your girl be the healthiest Tripawd! It sounds like she is right on track with dropping the weight. And Kerren is right, when the leg comes off a few pounds go with it. Ask your vet if you are concerned about the rate at which she's losing weight, and also keep in mind that Tripawds need to be slimmer than other dogs of their same breed/body type.

Charlie went into surgery at about 95, 96 lbs.  2 days later we brought him back for pain and he was 90 lbs.  Then this last Tuesday he had his staples out and he was down to 78 lbs. That was 2 weeks after surgery.    I had really reduced his quantity of food as he was not having bowel movements and then only started bumping it back up after the waste management system was up and running.  I'm back to about 90% of what he got before surgery.  Going to his reg. vet at the end of the month for a checkup and weight.  I'd like to see him at about 85#.
