Hi everyone!

So I think we will have had our last adriamycin treatment (5th) be pursuing a metronomic protocol.  We are a victim of hemangiosarcoma.  We have only briefly discussed it with our oncologist and will discuss in more detail at our next visit on 11/1/2011.

What I did notice on the Tripawds downloads section (Guide to Metronomic protocol - great!) was the addition of a high quality fish oil.

We have been giving salmon oil from Wholistic Pet http://www.thew.....D=554 for about 5 years now, or since Butchey was about 2 years old.  We started giving it when we went to a raw diet.

We buy it in a large quantity - but do keep it in fridge once we have opened itMy questions is if it takes us a few months to go through it, is the oil loosing any of its nutritional power?  Reason I ask is, someone just recently told us that she was advised to give salmon oil in capsule form because it stays fresher, and once you open a jug, it goes rancid in about a week.  ugh

I am going to bring this up as a discussion topic at our next vet & oncologist appointments, but thought it a good idea to ask here as well.  Of course, I am having a cow at the moment, thinking the product hasn't done my dogs any good since we buy by 1/2 galon or 32 oz size and it looses its potency.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Nancy (Butchey Hudson's Momma....and Lola's, too)

Hi Nancy,

I know you have been around in the Tripawds blogs - welcome to the forums!  You future posts will not need moderation, only a member's first post has to wait.

I have been using salmon oil for my quad pugs for quite awhile- I always keep it in the fridge.  I have small dogs and use in small doses so I buy in small volumes.  I started using oil because it was such a battle to get  Tri-pug Maggie to take pills.

Curious to see what others are doing.

Hi Nancy,

we are also doing MP with Abby (although she has osteosarcoma). We do fish oil with her, but she takes the same thing we take - a capsule from Costco. I was worried the Costco (Kirkland) brand would not be great, but did some research and found a report (forget where... somewhere reputable) that said the Costco brand (among others) were studied by Harvard Univ'y Med School and found to not have significant levels of mercury. (Hubby has a friend who is always pushing him to take fish oil derived from algae as it is supposed to be mercury free - but he would go through a bottle of it / week with the amount he takes!) Anyway, we like the Costco one because it has 900mg of DHA/EPA (i think those are the right names...), which is a LOT, so I can get a ton of the good stuff into her with just one pill. (Luckily she doesn't have a problem w/ pills and I just pop them into the back of her mouth.)

I had also read that the liquid goes rancid quickly - but don't remember where I read it and don't know if it's really true or not. Maybe someone else can chime in on that.

Hope the pups are doing well. They sure are cute!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

I was just looking in my newest Dr. Dressler book re: capsules vs. liquid but he doesn't say anything about it but can tell you that he recommends krill oil capsules mostly because "krill are near the bottom of the food chain, fish higher on the chain live longer and their fatty tissues tend to accumulate heavy metals like lead".

I've been giving Percy the Nature Made fish oil gel caps.  He won't eat the gel caps, so I cut a hole and squeeze the oil into his dinner.

Oh...I will have to google around for Krill.

I've found a couple of more things.  Folks say that if the oil is rancid, you will be able to smell it.  Refridging does seem to keep it longer.  But I'm not sure if getting a gallon for 2 dogs is a bit overkill.  ;0)

Going to ask the vets at the next appts.  I'll let you know what they come back with.  I would cut and squeeze if we had the caps, too.

We have a BJ's membership, but there is a Costco near us.  Unless I can find out of the BJs sells it and it is of good quality.

It's super important to refrigerate liquid fish oil. The capsules should be kept in the dark, in a cold place. The bottle should be opaque. Yep, Dressler does recommend Krill oil.

It just occurred to me that we need to write about this more in our Nutrition Blog, thanks for the reminder!
