My dog has food allergies so I am switching him to Honest Honest Kitchen's Preference and adding my own salmon or venison. My question is:

What other veggies or fruits can I add to Preference? I was thinking about pumpkin, apples, melons, broccoli, cauliflower… any ideas?

Thanks,

Joy

When I was feeding Trouble raw, in addition to some you have mentioned, I gave her leafy greens, sweet potato, carrots.  Green beans are a good filler if you need to keep the calories down.  She loves apples, mellon, peaches, and berries.  I don't think I added them to her raw, but she always eats some when I do.  A friend of mine has a satsuma tree and her dog picks oranges when they get ripe and eats them.

We've cooked for both Jerry and Wyatt and follow the advice of Dr. Dressler ….

Select some of each "above ground" and "below ground" vegetables. For instance, use kale and carrots, sweet potatoes and brocoli, potatoes and green beans, etc. Also, a variety of colors is good, the darker the more rich in nutrients, usually. Be sure to cook that salmon, and the veggies. Beef, chicken and other meats can be served raw. If not cooking the veggies, be sure to chop them very finely or the nutrients will not be absorbed.

I gave Trouble her veggies raw, but I put them through a food processor.  She absolutely LOVED it.

Thanks for the great ideas from both of you. Should I put the cooked veges in the blender or is just steaming the broccoli ok? I'm still switching him over from his other dog food so I am going to start adding these this weekend. I got a couple cans of 100% meat at the pet food store that I can use in an emergency. A friend went hunting so hopefully I will have some fresh venison soon. The rest of the time he and I will be eating LOTS of salmon. Is the canned salmon good enough to use?

I am also giving him a little yogurt at each meal to combat his tendency to get yeast infections (ears, neck, between toes, etc).

I love my babies.

We suggest chopping the veggies either way, just chop them finer (or use a food processor) if you're not cooking them. No need to bland them into a liquid, you just don't want the dog's system to pass them before fully digesting them.

I feed Preference to Maggie (along with Embark and Thrive by Honest Kitchen as well).  To be honest, I've never even thought of adding more veggie's to their mixes.  In my opinion, I would add as much protein (meat) as you can to keep the carb levels down.

Just food for thought wink

"Food for thought" ... too funny. Here's more: we often added canned salmon (or mackerel) to Jerry's food. Smelly, but easy and very beneficial. Wyatt's sensitive stomach can't handle that.

Thanks. I just bought a salmon filet he and I are going to split this week... lol. But the canned salmon is a great emergency if I don't have anything else to add. I'm hoping some of my friends are successful in their hunting these next few weeks so we get some venison.

I just thought some extra veges couldn't hurt, especially with some like brocoli for the extra antioxidants.

I really hope this helps his allergies. That's the real reason I'm changing.

So far he seems to love preference. This weekend is the test when the transition is over.
