Hi,

Has anyone heard of and/or tried feeding Apricot Kernels? I just read on someone's blog that it kills cancer and she's been feeding it to her dog for 2 yrs.

Thanks!

Was that Zeus' blog where you discovered the apricot kernels? It's the only time it's ever been mentioned in our community that I know of.

No, as a cancer therapy we haven't heard of this one and to be honest, my skeptic flag goes up when I hear about a "cancer cure" like this. I'm a believer in natural medicine, but not unless there is some type of scientific study backing up the remedy. Use discretion in the things you try to help your pup fight cancer, as you could be throwing your money away on sham products (of which there are many, sadly). If your vet isn't a supporter of natural medicine, find a holistic vet who is and then you can come up with a smart, proven plan of different ways to fight cancer.

It actually seems to be a big thing here in Germany as more people seem to be into homeopathy and holistic medicine nowadays than standard care.

I didn’t give those to my dog and I wouldn’t have, tons of people swear by them though. If you do want to feed that you have to keep in mind that the kernels are high in -I think-arsenic or some other toxic ingredient so it’s important not to overdo it.

I personally have a hard time with „cures“ for cancer, too but especially with this one since usually the people over here that use it are also the ones that have come at me for „putting my dog through chemo“, yet they give toxic supplements. That’s a very personal opinion here so take it with a grain of salt. But do believe there’s literature on the stuff out there but it may be in German 😉

Thank you Tina and Jerry,

My husband found it from a link that came from Tripawds, he thinks.

After trying to search the internet, we could not find any support for it. I only found that I should NOT feed my dog apricots or kernels as they are poisonous. My husband also found that Sloan Kettering, I think, abandoned it's use when only one person seemed to respond and it wasn't conclusive that it was the kernels that did it. I am always interested to know what is done in Europe because I think they are more open minded and their government does not seem to ban or try to ban holistic and homeopathic remedies. Someone told me that they work hand in hand with MDs.

Now that my dog has come up with spots on her lung I am reaching for more help. Dr. Loops sent me some lung support and next week I see an oncologist as well.

You’re right Christine, holistic medicine is a big thing here, especially homeopathy. My vet actually has her own holistic person that she works with.

Manni had different holistic supplements because of this, including certain mushrooms and other stuff. While I like my vets and MDs to be open minded about this and in the best case incorporate it, the downside is that you get quite a few „fanatics“ over here as well that totally reject any form of „classic treatment“ and I learned the hard way not to get into too many online discussions about this.

I think a good mixture of treatments is a sound approach but that’s my personal view. I‘ll try and find a link to the kernel stuff you mentioned. You can pop that into google translator if you want.

the second one is in English. Just in case you want to know more. There have been SO many holistic trends lately regarding „cancer cures“ that after I while I was just overwhelmed and quit my research altogether. Basically, the holistic person at my vet said in the later stages of Manni’s cancerthat she wouldn’t be able to do much for him apart from strengthening his immune system and improve his well-being a little. I felt that this was an honest statement, anything else I would have had a hard time believing.

Thank you Tina. Yes I completely agree it is overwhelming and many times I have just given up on trying to figure it out and then I'll grab for something else. Now I am trying to decide if I should add Apocaps but I would have to give three 2x a day and she already is taking 6 pills 3x plus other things.  I am thinking about adding 1 pill to the mix. Anything to help her live longer. But I am thankful she has lived well for as long as she has.  I lost my first dog to cancer before she turned 9. Now I am being greedy but so many dogs I know are living to 17 and 19 so why can't mine? Just sayin.

Oh trust me Christine, I had the exact same feelings. I did give Apocaps and my dog needed the same amount. I also started feeding the dog cancer diet, which was time consuming and sort of expensive, too, but well, you know: if there’s even a chance that it helps....

we did end up getting 24 months instead of the prognosticated 15 so there’s that. I will never know what made this possible and mainly I still think it wasn’t enough but at least we got that.

I gave Apocaps to Sassy.  I won't know if it extended the time I had with her or not.  To me it was worth it.  She survived almost 8 more months with lung mets.   I now give my 3 Ever Pup and from Dr D.  I swear by the stuff.  I don't know if it has helped or not but I know Snickers had several lumps aspirated thank God they were Cysts (not sure if the Ever pup helped with that or not)  Bosch my boy who will be 12 in May (old senior for a Rottie) every time he has blood work the vet says it comes back excellent.   I started them on the Ever Pup after Sassy passed because they told me I shouldn't give the Apocaps to a dog without cancer.  I was just trying to prevent it and they told me about the Ever Pup.  (not getting paid for anything I have said just 100% my experience).

I know we would do anything to keep our babies around longer.   I have never heard of Apricot Kernels being given.
