Hello everyone.

Hard to believe that 5.5 years ago I found this amazing place seeking information about how to prepare my life for a 3 legged dog overcoming cancer. And now, I have come full circle. I'm here to let you all know that the time has come to say goodbye to my beloved Chloe.

Many of the doggie medical decisions I've faced over the years have been fairly straightforward.  Cancerous tumor, take the leg. 2nd cancerous tumor, aggressive surgery to remove it (and never grew back). 3rd cancerous tumor, let it be. But this decision has been devastating. Even after all this time, I'm still the one who has to decide.

Chloe has fought to live life to the fullest, with as much love and spirit as possible.  After 14 years and 10 months, if there's one thing I've learned, it's that she's the kind of dog who will never give up/check out unless I wait far too long... to the point where I would regret not making the decision sooner.

Years ago, I promised Chloe that I would never be that person. I promised I would never let her suffer unnecessarily. So here I am, making the hard decision.

 Image Enlarger

While I had originally prepared myself for early next year, I've had to consider the following and ultimately decided a few weeks wouldn't be better for her or for me:

  • Tumor: This one is on her neck and it has grown ~50% larger over the past year since discovery/diagnosis.  I have no regrets deciding to leave it be.
  • Mobility: being 3 legged and arthritic, her independent mobility has diminished greatly over the past year.  While she can hobble around the house (and still climbs up on the couch oh-my), she requires ALOT of assistance on walks to go to the bathroom. When she does hobble around, she increasingly gets fatigued and sits down waiting for rescue.
  • Heart Murmur: Diagnosed with grade 4/5 heart murmur (moderate/severe) 2 years ago. While she does not require medication for it, it's a degenerative condition and will only continue to worsen.
  • Weight: She's always been a picky eater, but even with consuming a little less than "normal", she has lost ~5lbs over the past year. And for a dog that's always been slim, it shows.  Not sure if this is due to her age or unknown internal tumor/cancer things.
  • Incontinence: She's more frequently having "sleep poops" even with outside time and walks before/after work. Furthermore, she is having more poop accidents in the house when we are gone. We never scold her, we understand its age related, but we still always have about 15 towels laid around the house for those accidents. Somehow she's very good at aiming her deuces not on the towels...

Why its devastating:

  • Things she still loves ALOT: going for walks, meeting people, meat/treats (yes we spoil her with bacon), going in the car, and she still throws the biggest doggie ticker tape parade every time we come home.

Ultimately, she's got the mind and spirit, but no longer the body.  And while some of the aforementioned considerations have their good days, she is steadily declining. Mostly its heartbreaking that I am powerless to do anything to reverse the downward spiral. It's part of life.

***

This morning I called an in home pet euthanasia service (referred to by family friend) and scheduled an appointment for Dec 27, 2015 at 3pm PST.  As explained on their website and by the vet,

special medications are used to sedate your pet prior to giving the final injection. The sedatives are chosen to suit your pet's special circumstances, including species, age, weight, and type of illness. These drugs are administered by a first injection which alleviates pain, causes relaxation, and is often accompanied by a deep anesthetic sleep.

After your pet is very sedate, usually soundly asleep, a final injection is given. This final injection is an overdose of yet another sedative. The overdose results in a painless and peaceful passing.

and that's all I want for her. A peaceful passing.

And for anyone wondering about the cost (which is of no consequence to me considering I didn't want to traumatize her by taking her to the vet, given she always walks out with less of her each time, please feel free to laugh at this joke, aka. she lost a leg, lost a tumor...my attempt at tripawd humor right now), it is:

  • $350 for the in home service. They bring everything, do all aftercare, and contact primary vet.
  • $230 for individual cremation.
  • $20 for pawprint (though I'm heading to craft store to get a "kid handprint kit" to also do a 3 legged plaster paw print preserve.

For any of you wondering about my emotional state, right now, I'm actually OK. But Wednesday night/Thursday morning, I had panic attacks, I was hyperventilating, crying to/from during work...I was grieving even though she was right there.  I was missing the point.

Today I've woken up with more clarity about what is important.  I get to PLAN to say goodbye. And I get to say goodbye because her body is giving out from old age and NOT because ANY of the other cancer tumors have taken over to the point of no return. It's a win. It's all I could have hoped for.

We still have ~10 days to spoil her, love her, cuddle her, laugh and play with her.  I plan on running errands (with Chloe) to go do fun things, say goodbye to important pawsons in her life, buy some STEAK and other treats, and plan what will be the most doggie fun Christmas week ever.

Though I'm not happy about the fact I do have to say goodbye, I am happy she's here with me right now. And more importantly, I know she's happy with me here right now.

Chloe is hands down the best friend I have ever had the pleasure of spending the last 14 years and 10 months with.

Three cheers to a warrior princess (as we call it here on Tripawds)!

Chloe became a rear amp tripawd on 7-29-10. Another tumor was removed on front leg 2-20-14. Found 3rd tumor on neck 2-2015, but she's still kicking cancer's butt at age 14. Chloe's blog

This is absolutely the most beautiful tribute I have ever read.  Chloe must be one of the most loved dogs on this planet.  Sending her off to the bridge with the week long celebration you have planned for her warms my heart.  After all loving them enough to set them free is the last and greatest gift we have l ft to give them as their earthly caretakers.  Chloe you are a Warrior Princess extrodinare!  When your time comes fly fast, healthy and whole to the bridge.  Your Mom knows you will wait there for her.  You will be forever a huge piece of Moms heart.  Your entire family will be in my thoughts and heart.

WOW..... you sound so very calm through what I can also tell is a tremendously painful and heartbreaking time for you. You said it best when you wrote this:

It is exactly how I wanted to say goodbye to my beloved girl. A plan. At the beach. By our home. Her favorite spot.

It is never easy to say goodbye but the grace and dignity you are giving Chloe, I just have to say bravo. IT is the greatest gift you can give her and I know she knows it. She will forever live in your heart and soul....

My heart is with you ... sending you love and hugs and warm wishes.

Bless you - sweet Chloe - you are a warrior and hero for forever!

Chloe's Mom and the Warrior Princess,

Not only is this a beautiful tribute to Chloe, I'm so impressed that you have put so much thought into every step of the process of letting Chloe go. This is such decision but you have clearly made it out of love for Chloe.

Chloe will have a fabulous time being spoiled, visiting those who love her, having fun and most of all being with you the whole time. I hope you can focus each day and live each and every moment without thinking about the future.

Hugs, scratches and wonderful memories,

Nicole, Jim and I were so sad to see this latest news, we are so sorry. Like you, we realize this stage is part of life but oh it just hurts, we get it.

Chloe will always be a legend in the Tripawds Nation, and there will never be another one like her. She bounced back 110% every single time something happened and her story leaves us in awe. The dedication you showed her was beyond measure. What an amazing mom you've been to her.

Folks, check out Chloe's amazing journey in this post from earlier this year:

Tripawd Tuesday: Chloe’s Constant Courage

What an honor it was to meet you both and get to smooch your sweet girl in person. You have both traveled such a long road together, I can only imagine how you wrestled with this decision, she's been such a big part of your life. You adopted her while you were in high school right? And now look at you, a working girl in the big city. We feel like we've known you both forever.

You've prepared well and I like how you think. It's good to know what to expect so that you don't have to make this decision on the fly, that is the worst way possible I think. She will earn her angel wings peacefully and transition to her next "assignment" with ease. No dog could ever ask for more. Please know that if you want to talk before or after, we are here for you and we even have the Tripawds Helpline now too. You are both loved and cherished here and will always be a part of our community. Give Chloe a big smooch from us OK?

Simply, always, amazing. Love you both.

Oh, how I hope I can be half this strong when it's time to say good-bye to Murphy!  I know that it's getting closer, but it doesn't get easier.

You can make your own dough - 1/2 cup salt, 1/2 cup flour, 1/4 cup water.   Mix well, roll out to about 1/4", make your impression (that was the hard part!  lol), bake at 200 for about 4 hours.  Then paint with acrylic paint and spray with a clear acrylic.

I'll be thinking of you both on the 27th.  Fly high sweet Chloe!  <3

Murphy had his right front leg amputated due to histiocytic sarcoma at 7 years old. He survived 4 years, 2 months & 1 week, only to be taken by hemangiosarcoma at 11 1/2 years 6/12/17

I don't think I've ever encountered a more enlightened, guided, selfless, heartfelt "transition tribute". Your love and devotion for the beautiful Chloe truly is without boundaries. It transcends this earthly journey and will continue on with her as she goes through another open door onto the next phase of her journey.

You jave added yet a other layer to to Chole's larger than life legacy that will continue to touch lives and inspire in ways you will never know.

I also was one of the "lucky " ones and was able to give my beloved Happy Hannw a celebratory send off before she took a "downward spiral" and uccumbed to an inevitable "crisis phase". When the vet came to the house I had her hide all the "tools" and Happy Hannah was wagging when she came in.

Happy Hannah LOVED the delicacy of deer poop! Yep, you've got it! I had a sscoop of deer poop on her plate, along with ice cream, steak and M&Ms. Just a suggestion! Days before the "visit", I made a paw print with my hand print next to hers. I also snipped some of her fur and saved it. On the day of her transition (after), I cut some of my hair and taped it over her heart.

We understand like no others can. There will be time for the gut wrenching grief that will knock you to your knees. We will be here by your side helping to hold you up. But now is not the time. Savor the moment and enjoy the loving and spoiling!

Sending you love and light

Thank you everyone for your very thoughtful responses. I'm currently in the process of taking LOTS of picts and will update her blog/this thread (with sneak peeks) throughout the final journey with Chloe.

Here is a sneak peak meme I made for the upcoming post:

Image Enlarger

Yes my darling, this is just part of what you'll be eating for the rest of your life! Beef patties stuffed with left over chicken and wrapped in bacon!

Linda & Max: Thank you for your lovely comments, well wishes and yes, she will always be a huge part of my heart! smiley

Alison & Spirit Shelby: Thank you for your thoughtful response. Yes, having her at home, with her favorite people I believe is the best gift I can give her.  Chloe also LOVED the beach, which I was considering, however its likely to rain where we are, so inside will have to be the next best thing! And glad you enjoyed her 3yr video clap

Kerren & Tripawd Kitty Mona: Thank you for your kind words.  I do find myself practicing the yoga advice of "being in the present moment" and constantly reminding myself to not think of the future, but of the here and now smiley

Rene & Jim: Thank you so much for all of your advice and support over the years, you both are amazing and I'm so glad that we were able to connect early on in Chloe's tripawd life!  And I totally missed Chloe's Tripawd Tuesday post, so thanks so much for linking me to it! Loved it!!! And I'll be sure to utilize your services (hotline is so great to have!) as needed.  Hard to know how I'll feel after since I'm mentally on a mission right now just to give Chloe the best last few days I can possibly imagine. superstar

Donna & Murphy: Thanks so much for the recipe! Totally forgot about DIY dough! big-blink

Sally, Happy Hannah, Merry Myrtle and Frankie: Oh my goodness how your deer poop story made me laugh SO HARD! Chloe is also a poop delicacy fanatic, though I don't think she's ever had the deer variety.  She is quite particular for turkey poop (when we lived in an area with wild turkeys) and cat poop. While I can get the latter....I think she has had MORE than her fair share in life, lol!!! And thank you for your wonderful words of support, hard to imagine me leaving a legacy in addition to Chloe at this point, but I hope that other people, like you said, find creative ways to say goodbye to their furry soul mates.

Chloe became a rear amp tripawd on 7-29-10. Another tumor was removed on front leg 2-20-14. Found 3rd tumor on neck 2-2015, but she's still kicking cancer's butt at age 14. Chloe's blog

What an amazing journey.  I am so glad you got to plan and have a plan for that day.  Those days are the toughest with a plan or without.  I know ours was without but I tried to make that last moment the greatest I could.  Thank you Rene for sharing the video.  Chloe was and still is an amazing dog and will always be remembered in the Tripawd Nation.

Chloe, that is a fine, fine meal sweet girl!! My guess is you topped it off with a dish of ice cream to clean your palette.

The look of anticipation on Chloe's face...and the disbelief that it's all for her...PRICELESS!!

What a tribute! What a blessed pup Chloe is. I know this is so hard for you. You are willing to bear pain so she can rest easy at the bridge. I love all the planning you have put in place to make her week so special. Hugs, Lori, Ty and Gang
