I just don't know where to put this but I feel I need to get this out, my wonderful greyhound lost her leg on Monday,

She was laying on the sofa on sunday waiting for my hubby to come home with our other dog, when he pulled up out side they got excited as they always do so I opened the door to let them out to see him,

the dogs started to play and cassie my greyhound ran up the stairs and back out but as she came down the stairs she fell out of the house and tore her face and broke her leg

we rushed her to the vets, she was kept in but during the night she managed to push the broken bone through her leg we were phoned about this at 1 oclock in the morning

the next day she was operated on for 4 1/2 hours trying to safe her leg, but we were call again then to make the decision put her to sleep or take her leg off, its the front left leg that has been amputated

I feel responsible if I hadn't of let her out, and have we done the right thing as when she is struggling cant get up and is uncomfortable tears sting my eyes, I am grieving for her leg and I am struggling with the fact have I been selfish by not letting her go, she is only two and my baby, when she was at the vets for 3 night I just kept wanting to touch her again and feel her ears in my hand,

I am sorry for rambling,

So sorry for this happening, but please, please, please do not beat yourself up for this accident......she just lost a leg, and as bad as that seems, she will be perfectly fine. We are the ones with the emotional attachment to limbs, and think our beloved pets can't live without one of theirs, but they cannot care less.....once she recovers, she will be bouncing around like she still has 4 legs, I promise. There are several Greyhounds here that are older and lost a limb to cancer, and are still doing fabulously. Nixon is one off the top of my head. Your girl is very young and will overcome this better you can possibly imagine.

You are not rambling, this is without a doubt, a very stressful situation, and you will get through it, just let go of the guilt and help your girl to heal. She will feed off your sadness and stress, and could affect her healing, so think happy thoughts and she will be fine, and heal well.

We are all here to help you through, and I do have to say, I absolutely KNOW you did the best thing possible by doing amputation instead of putting her down......in the long run, you will look back and never believe you actually thought it better to put her down. She WILL be fine and do great.

Sending {{{hugs}}} to help you through,

Bonnie & Angel Polly

Bonnie said it all so well! Ditto!

Accidents happen. The important thing is you jave taken care ofnit and she is onnthe road to reco v ery! And recovery is n o picnic so stay connected tonus and letnus support you while you are supporting her. Right now you are exhausted and fearful and not thinking clearly. I can assure you that yournoup would NOT want her life to end knowing she c ould have a full happy life full of loving and spoiling well j nto her senior years!!!

Just remember, if a human had an accident and had to loose a leg, it would NEVER cross anyone's mind to "put the human down"! EVER!!!

Her sparkle will come back and the pain of surgery will disappear!!!

Stay connected, we understand....and read Bonnies post again...apot on!

Love and hugs!

It doesn't sound to me like you were doing anything you don't usually do.  Young dogs are excitable and accidents happen.  It doesn't do anyone in your pack any good to dwell on what happened.  You need to learn what you can and move on.

Watch Cassie carefully- she might seem down and sad while she recovers but don't get discouraged.  Once the meds are done and she learns her balance she will be your Cassie again.  My little pug Maggie didn't like change in her routine and was a slug for weeks after her surgery.  Often the younger pups bounce back quickly and the biggest problem is keeping them quiet.  You were not selfish to do the amputation- she will be fine on three.  She will be teaching you lessons soon in resiliency and living in the moment.

And never feel bad about rambling here.  This is the best place to unload your fears and sad feelings- we all have been there and we understand.  Dumping here will allow you to be a good strong pack leader when you bring Cassie home.
