Hi all

I am living in UK and arranging for a tri-paw 10 month old dog to come to the UK end of January 2012.  The young girl who rescued her from the street is fostering her and she got delivered 400km from one place to Bucharest yesterday.

On arrival she seems very unsteady - any pictures sent from the people that found her normally have her in a lying-down position.  She's missing the front right leg and the new foster lady in Bucharest said that on arrival she was VERY unsteady and shaky on her back legs and spent most of the time on her belly.

We are trying to find out more info about what happened.  We do know that she was found as a puppy with her leg caught in an animal trap and there was no choice but to remove it.

We're all very "new" to this and want to give her the best care and chances possible.  We have sent questions to the person that found her in the street to assess how recent the amputation was etc - at the moment she's around 8-9 months - approx 10 months when she will get to the UK.

Thanks for any help you could give.

Nikki

If it helps - she looks VERY much like a Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog - which makes me think she's gonna be pretty large! 😉

Hi Nikki, thanks for joining us here. We're so hoppy to hear you are rescuing her. What a journey for this pup! Will she be permanently a part of your pack or are you looking for a home for her? If she's going to go to a new home, our Rescue Forum is a great place to post her info when she's ready.

It sounds like she may be unsteady on her feet due to a lack of strengthening exercises and body awareness. If possible, I would get her to be assessed by a canine rehabilitation vet who can give you a comprehensive gait analysis and strengthening exercises that will help her get to where she needs to be. In the mean time, do check out these posts from our friends at California Animal Rehab, which can give you more tips about gentle movement exercises you can do now. And our Gear Blog's Fitness Page is another great place to start.

For some reason your pics aren't showing up. Hmmm. Also, I hope you don't mind but I moved your post here, which is more appropriate for your story, since our tech support forum is strictly for help with the website itself.

Thanks again, and welcome!

Hi Nikki - just wanted to welcome you to the site. Jerry has already given you good advice about getting her assessed for some possible rehab.

Since she is so young she will hopefully adapt quite quickly. Our tripawd, Abby, had her right front leg amp'd in Oct 2010 and she was only 15 months at the time. It took a little while to build her strength and stamina back up but once she was fully recovered she was able to do pretty much all the things she could do before.

You are an angel for helping a Tripawd in need!

Welcome,

Jackie, Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
