First off we have seen our vet about this .  Quixotes stump, incision site is swollen and appears sore.  The vet said R.I.C.E.  but its a rear leg with no actual stump (leg was removed at the hip).  He has fallen on the area a few times.  What would you do

I think I would start with the first two...rest and ice. It would be pretty hard to elevate it, but I suppose there would be some way of using compression, too. Perhaps an ace bandage? Did the vet say anything about anti-inflamatories?

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

She said that if the swelling does not go down we would discuss NAIDS.  He has skin cancer as well, So we are unsure if this could be related to that.  I actually am debating do more testing to see if this has spread.
Right now we are really hoping he has only injured himself as he is a terrier and high energy.  She did say that most owners would not have noticed the swelling as it is very minor at the moment.

If he's falling over to one side it could be that he needs to develop better core strength to stay upright. If you are able to see a canine rehabilitation therapist they could assess him to see if that's indeed the case, and instruct you on how to exercise him to gain core strength and balance.

Quixote!!!  What's gping on cutie pie??

You've gotten great input from Kathi and Jerry!

Apunds like it could be any number of things completely unrelated to anything "bad"!  Guess your Vet is taking  The one step at a time" aplroach.  It does seem like an anti-inflammatory could help at the same time as doing the ice and rest.  Of course, if they aren't necessary because the first two steps take care of it, then that's good! 🙂

I know Kathi and her sweet Murphy really benefited from Rehab/PT, so definitely check into that if itsw a possibility!

Keep us posted.  And we would loooove to see some pictures of this adorable pup!
