YAY! All of royals staples come out tomorrow!! He's finally in the clear! Thank you all SO MUCH for your support! He played with his squeaky tennis ball for the first time since November yesterday and even jumped up on me to give me kisses! Now that we are looking at long term care I have a few questions. For those of you who have had pets without cancer with amputations are there any long term complications you've personally had with a younger or middle aged pet later on in life? What kinds of proactive steps can we take to reduce stress on his joints? More immediately, what was the first thing you and your dog did when the staples came out?? Are they sore afterward? Or is he ready to go run around and play in the snow afterwards? He's such a cuddler but I know he misses playing with other dogs in the dog park! We live right next to a nice one. Is there a type of dog food you would recommend that's sold at a major retailer like Walmart or target for joint health? We don't want to buy food through our vet as they've been having problems keeping food in stock. Also does anyone here have any experience with Idiopathic head tremors in dogs? Royal has experienced some and had an episode in the vets office in early January. Gabapentin seems to have stopped them but is it realistic to keep him in gabapentin for life? I'm not worried about the cost so much as what it's gonna do to him long term. On the other hand it can treat "phantom limb" pain although whether or not dogs have phantom limb pain is unknown. He's not in pain when he has them and it's not a seizure but i really have no idea whether or not they're causing any damage or what's making them happen. From what I've found they're generally a mystery although some people have said it can be linked to topical flea treatment and other medications or even food but I have found no evidence to support this and I would rather have Royal safe from further problems. Also what are your Tripawds favorite games for play time? Fetch with his tennis ball is a lot harder and he lost interest pretty fast. Thanks fellow Tripawds members!

I don't have any answers to your questions, but someone else probably does. I'm impressed that you even THOUGHT of all those, it sounds like a lot to figure out!

HOORAY for the staples coming out!! That is great news! I bet he'll be excited to be back running around and playing at the dog park, whenever that happens. Congratulations. clap

Congrats on staples out!!! That is a huge milestone.

Have you downloaded Jerry's reading lists : http://download.....com/store/? If not, I would highly suggest it as there are excellent tips for keeping your tripawd in tip-top shape! Keeping them lean is a must for sure as that helps with the joints and many other things. I know Wyatt Ray has been a model tripawd for many years due to core exercises and I am sure his pawrents will weigh in (Jerry aka Rene).

And of course the Oaktown pack has a family of tripawd shepards that are healthy and happy as tripawds!

I think mental games like puzzles are good for tripawds (mine was a cancer dog but we played puzzles too when we couldn't chase and play tug anymore).

Great job!!!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Go Royal! Staples out! That's great!

I don't  have nearly all the answers to your questions 😊 But I am sure you can find most of it on here somewhere.

From personal experience I knew how important physio therapy and building muscles can be so pretty much the first thing I did before the stitches came out was make an appointment. I think it helped a lot and decently built-up and maintained muscles also keep joints healthier for longer.

I let Manni play with other dogs because I want him happy. But then he's almost ten and a little more 'settled' by now. I still flinch when it turns a little wild though because I am always scared he'll tear something. I will continue letting him play though.

Regarding supplements check tripawds nutrition here.

hhope this helps at all
