My little mate was in an accident on Friday night which resulted in his hind left leg being badly broken and requiring amputation. That's looking like its going to go ahead tomorrow. I know it's the bet thing for him. But I'm also silently freaking out. Are there any other hind leg dachshund amputees that could perhaps share there story. I've been told that because of his long back this could potentially cause spinal issues later on In life. Has anyone ever heard of complications such as these arising?? Im just worried about my little mate so any tips or advise or even stories of your own experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi and welcome to the club nopawdy wants to join. I'm so sorry to hear about Baxter's accident but very glad he survived and has a good future ahead.
It's OK to inwardly freak out, this is a big, life-changing thing and when you have basically zero warning it turns your world upside down. Now, take a deep breath and know that things DO get better. Have you checked out Jerry's Required Reading List or the Tripawds e-books ? Those resources will help answer many of your questions as will our pawesome community so stay tuned...
Meanwhile as far as other Doxies, honestly we haven't had many but I did find this post from a guest in our Forums last year who offered her assistance to other Doxie pawrents, I would drop her a line.
Keep in mind that all dogs and cats are at greater risk of degenerative arthritis and joint issues arising from their bodies compensating by being on three legs. I can see Doxie's being even more susceptible because of their long body but that doesn't mean a given that he will, not at all. If it's a possibility for you, you might want to consider a prosthetic for him, since he hasn't had the surgery yet. Prosthetics aren't for everyone but if you're the least bit curious, check out these OrthoPets interviews now before the surgery (a prosthetic only works if there's enough leg left behind to attach it to).
Also, no matter what you do, definitely check in with a board-certified rehab therapy vet who can give you insight on what to expect and how to prevent future joint issues. Our e-book, Loving Life on Three Legs, talks a lot about rehab therapy and how to find a good practitioner, as does this News blog post.
I hope this helps. Keep in touch and let us know how things are going, we are here to help.

I'm so sorry to hear about Baxter's accident. I don't have experience with Dachshunds...my Leland was a 108lb Dobie hind leg amp. I can tell you that the ebooks offered on this site helped me and my husband tremendously in knowing what to expect and how to help our boy when he came home.
I can tell you that Leland was really starting to get things figured out on how to maneuver on his own around the 2 week point but Baxter may do this more quickly since he's a smaller boy.
The first couple of weeks will have highs and lows and that's normal. The main thing is figuring out Baxter's pain medication regimen with the vet. There are several different medications used for pain management and each animal is different in what works best for them.
Sorry I couldn't give you much insight on possible complications due to Baxter's longer body structure but I'm sure others will chime in.
Stay close to this community as there are a lot of wonderful people here to lend support and advice on their experiences.
Sending positive thoughts to Baxter that he has a safe surgery and recovery.
