Hi, my cocker spaniel was involved in a road traffic accident yesterday and we have had the tough decision to have his rear leg removed, I have just spoken to the vet and they are concerned that he might have nerve damage to his remaining rear leg because he is reluctant to put weight on it and his reactions aren’t great. He is on a lot of medications and painkillers at the moment but i am really starting to struggle now as he is my everything and I don’t know what I’ll do if I loose him.

Hi Matthew, hope you don't mind we relocated your post but we thought your boy deserves his own topic. What's his name?

We are sorry to hear about your boy. If nerve damage is suspected, we recommend getting a second opinion from a physiotherapist. Sometimes nerve damage can be healed through dedicated therapy but it can take up to three months or longer. If your dog's pain is well-controlled right now it's worth a try to talk to one.

So sorry you and your  pup are dealing  with all this. I know this is a shock.   Your mind is racing  a thousand miles a minute  trying to retain all the I formation being thrown at you right now.  As Jerry said, getting another opinion from a.  physiotherapist or even another orthopedic surgeon could be very helpful.

Of course, I'm  not a Vet in any way shape or form, but it may also be that all the pain meds, trauma, etc.could be  making his "other" leg  not be as responsive   as it should be right now.

If you have his pain well managed and he's getting top notch care and clinical signs ate all good, getting  that other opinion asap may give you the insight you need on how to proceed.

IF...IF.... it appears  that the "other" leg will end up being  completely "iseless" and with no function, it may be that a rear wheel chair could be an answer.  Dogs certainly can have a quality  life with these supportive wheels for their back end.  ALSO, I the "other" leg can reverse some of the nerve damge with time, these wheels can help in the meantime.

I'm so sorry you are faced with all the uncertainties at this point.  But if you can keep him "comfortable" with pain meds, you can gain a little time to check out some of these options.

Your love for your pup comes shining  through. Try and take some deep breaths, clear your head, and you will see a path forward that is best for your pup.

How old is he?  What's  his personality?  Sounds like he's a fighter to have already survived the accident.

Stay connected and update when you can.   We are here for you amd sending  pawsitive healing energy to your sweet boy.

Hugs
