Hello all and TIA for any input. Pancho, our 9 year old ridgeback x mastiff had a hind leg amputation 3 days ago. This was due to a car accident 6 days ago, so we expect he’s still feeling sore from that event also.

So far he has been very very reluctant to stand, let alone walk. We can get him to a supported standing position, however he is either unwilling or unable to stand independently. Today is the first day he’s actually started to eat properly, so his strength would only just be starting to return.

We are wanting to be very patient with him, however my question is, if he is not showing much ability to stand independently at this point....does this reflect his long term prognosis? I am an eternal optimist, so I guess I’m interested in knowing whether a slow return to standing and walking (particularly in a larger older dog) is to be expected.

I feel like I’ve read many stories where the dog is up the next day, learning to balance and walk, so I’m looking to hear from people whose dogs have been a little less keen, but have eventually been able to stand and walk independently.

Many many thanks, kristy

Hi Kristy and Pancho, welcome to the club nopawdy wants to join! We are glad you found us, and hope to help you feel better about the situation.

First, three days is not a long time at all. Try to put yourself in his paws, how would you be if you went through the same situation? I know that I would be in worse shape, most humans would. We tend to expect so much of our dogs because we aren't used to seeing them down and it's hard to picture them getting better but in 99.9% of cases they really do bounce back and show us how resilient they are! Patience is key. That, and excellent pain control.

Check out our Size and Age Matters forum to see stories about other giant breed dogs. You may want to continue this post there, because you'll notice that most giant breeds tend to need more time to recuperate than other dogs. I promise, not all dogs are getting around the next day. Those that do tend to be extremely fit, lean, and younger. So whatever you do, don't compare Pancho to others. He is is own lovable big dog who will recuperate on his own timeline.

For now my question is, how is his pain management ? What meds is he on? How often, and how much is the dosage? Pain meds need tweaking usually after a day or two. Once you get the right combo you'll see that he's going to start doing better. It's important to work with your vet to find that perfect combo of meds.

I hope this helps! Check out Jerry's Required Reading List and the Tripawds e-books library for more tips, and stay tuned for feedback from others!

Can only ditto everything Jerry said👍   Spot on as usual!

Cannot wait to see a pic of your sweet Pancho.  Here's  a link to help

adding images

I joined  this community  six days after my Bull Mastiff 's amputation.  I was convinced  I had made a horrible decision. Her recovery  was no picnic, that's  for sure.

Yes, larger dogs do need more time to get their sea legs and figure  things out.  And as you noted, without question Pancho is extra sore and extra stiff from the accident.   The one thing uoj can do to help that is massage, massage, massage.  Especially  lots of ,massage before you try and help him stand.

And as Jerry said, pain management   is crucial.   Good meds can sometimes  make them a bit woozy though.  At the three day mark all the strong  hospital meds should  be out of his system, so consistent  pulling is important  now.

And YAY for starting  to get his appe back.  Celebrate  that as a victory!  Drinking  and peeing okay?  Pooping  may take a few days.

Hang in there.  Pancho  is recovering  at his own big dog pace, and after an accident  too!

Hi, Brownie was a choc lab three weeks before his 12th birthday at time of front leg amputation. Brownie spent two days at the vet. He started standing in his own the second day home which would be day four. He then started hopping but just small distance. But everyday he got stronger. By the second week he mastered the doggie door and even jumped up on the couch.

The best advice I got was to be patient . So I am giving you the same.  Pancho will get there and surprise you everyday!  The best feeling ever is when you feel so proud!

Sending positive thoughts for a speedy recovery...

My Beautiful Beloved Brownie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on February 26, 2019.  With all odds against him he lived an additional one year and eight days with amputation, love, and prayer.  I was honored to be his mom, and I have never been so proud!  He will live forever in my Heart!
