narlah my 8 month old female staffy/pit bull cross was run over by a car 10 days ago and severely damaged her rear right leg.it was amputated 8 days ago and to be honest shes coping better than i am.shes amazing really.my concern is that she has started to pull her fur out om her other rear leg and her torso on the left hand side.could it be stress,or is it because she semi house bound and cant yet play with her boyfriend (3 1/2 yr old male staffy/pitbull)because they do like to play ruffhouse style?shes really staining at the leash to play but untill the stitches come out and probably a week after that i`m unsure when to allow them to play

After my dog, Jack, had his right front leg amputated, he took up the habit of chewing on one of his back legs.  He licked it so much that he developed an open wound, and the hair was gone from around it.  Our vets never mentioned it when we brought him in for check-ups, so I finally asked our surgeon if we should be concerned.  He said Jack was probably doing it due to boredom.  We just kept a close eye on him to make sure he didn't lick/chew, and sure enough, after the stitches came out and he could run around, he miraculously stopped messing with his leg!  Best of luck to Narlah and I'm glad she's healing so well!

Welcome narlah and thanks for asking! Sounds like your pup may be reacting to the pain meds, and the fact that he needs to be cooped up right now. Consider using an e-collar, or see what your vet thinks if a mild sedative might help during this recovery period. Once the stitches are out, supervised playtime should be just fine. You may be surprised how resilient these pups are!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

I agree with the suggestion for an ecollar.  I know that they are a pain in the butt but they do work at keeping the dogs from chewing and licking.  You are going through the hard part now so take heart.  Things will be better soon and because Narlah will surprise you with how good she will adjust.  It really is harder on us than on them.

Debra & Emily, a five year old doberman mix, who was diagnosed with an osteosaecoma. She had a right rear leg amputation on May 19, 2009. On November 10, 2009 she earned her wings and regained her fourth leg.

Thanks for the update! If you do not hear from Tazziedog, please consider asking Pam's professional opinion in the Ask A Vet forum.
