Has your younger rear TriPaw had a hip replace in their remaining rear leg?

Well after much pleading with the folks in my arsenal and a bit of luck, I was able to get Logan in for a checkin with Sophie’s amp surgeon. *Sophie is our other TriPaw kiddo.

On one hand the news is awful but on the other hand I feel lucky we have an option to help my boy. Logan had xrays on his elbows and rear remaining leg. Rear film shows he has hip dysplasia. His little ball is just more of a flattened saucer and isn’t fitting into the socket. He’s just over four months old and new to us but I knew something wasn’t right. Due to the deformity we were informed that Logan will need a hip replacement when he’s 12 months or so (when he has matured). I’m so sad for him because he’s been in pain and up until today I couldn’t help him. We were given carprofen which he’ll be on for awhile and a ten day supply of gabapentin to see if that helps with his pain.

On the positive side after calling Sophie’s PT folks and two other PT places in our area and being told December or January at the earliest for a new client, I found a well respected PT place about 45min from us and we are able to get onto their schedule next weekend for an intake!

We were told that the hip replacement surgery has a 95-97% success rate but with a TriPaw it maybe a little wonky. I’m grateful that our surgeon is connecting with other surgeons in the area to brainstorm on Logan’s case. Has anyone had a younger TriPaw need to have a hip replacement? Thoughts or concerns to pass along?

Im a little sad that he was in pain and I feel guilty even though I couldn’t have done anything different. I hate that I can’t fix it for him quicker.

Awww dang I'm sorry that he's got the dysplasia but it's such a great thing that you are on it, and have a plan.

I'm curious, did the vets mention anything about a JPS surgery (juvenile pubic symphysiodesis)? I'm not sure if Logan is still young enough to do it, but it has a pretty good track record in slowing down hip dysplasia in younger dogs.

You are awesome advocates for Logan and Sophie! Don't feel bad, be proud that you are great advocates!

I appreciate the words of support!

I did ask about the JPS as another pet parent had mentioned it to me. Sophie’s surgeon said he couldn’t find any data or literature about performing that procedure safely on a kiddo that was already a TriPaw.  He also mentioned that Logan was the youngest kiddo he had met who was a TriPaw at such a young age not due to being an at birth issue.

Logan is such a great kiddo. In the 8 weeks we’ve had him he has sailed onto level 2 of puppy classes (we think some of his reactivity towards other puppies may be to his being in pain), he genuinely seems to love his new life with us, and I want to ensure he’s taken care of in the best ways we can. I’m hoping this surgery when he does have to have it gives him the best chance at a less painful life.

Make no mistake about it, you are an Angel on Earth to Logan and Sophie!  OMD!!  They are sooo lucky to have you as their hooman!  Your heart is so big and your love for them clear has no boundaries!!

I know uou feel some relief in this "challenging " scenario knowing you  have Logan's pain controlled.  The anti inflammatory ahou help, as well as the Gabapentin.   And, with Vet advice of course, you can keep him on Gabapentin for basically as long as you need it.  A lot of dogs are on low doses consistently  in cases of arthritis, etc.

We would love to see pictures  of your two Tripawds.  Here's a link to help

Anytime, that's why we are here.

Your surgeon is correct, there is no literature on it yet for Tripawds. We found out about it when our Wyatt Ray 's orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Theresa Wendland from Colorado, did a JPS on her Tripawd, Eileen.

She did the surgery while she was still practicing at Colorado State. As far as I know, Eileen recovered smoothly and is doing great! If it's something that you would still consider, maybe your surgeon can connect with her?
