Our German Shephard dog had a litter a few days ago one of the pups has been born with a not fully grown leg it sort of looks like a claw. It is perfectly big size and all other legs and paws are formed. Does anyone know what this might be?

Hi Robyn,

This isn't too uncommon, we've seen many dogs and cats join us here because of a limb deformity like this.

The good news is that you might not need to amputate. The pup could be a great candidate for a prosthesis. See:

It would be wise to get him to an orthopedic specialist to have him evaluated so he gets the care he needs to have a great life.

Got any photos? We would love to see 'em!

Leo is a border collie who was born with the cord wrapped around his leg.  They amputated his leg at just a few days old.  Here is a link to their blog:  http://leothebr.....llo-world/

Hi Robyn,

To me it sounds like you may be dealing with Ectrodactyly. https://en.wiki.....trodactyly. I recently adopted a dog that has this and have made the decision to amputate the limb. I was trying to upload a picture but the technology is defeating me. The puppy will likely learn to use it (with some pain) but given some care and attention, will grow to be a great dog like my Corky! Best of luck to you!

Hi Corky and family, thanks for joining the Forums! I totally spaced and forgot you're dealing with a similar issue. It's so nice of you to stop by and offer support 🙂 Here's a forum post about adding images to the forums. If you'd like assistance just holler!

Robyn, here's Corky's blog and here's a photo of the handsome pup:
