Good evening everyone!  First, I am so excited to have found a community where I can get ideas, share stories and find help!  Little Brigh (pronounced "Bree"), a wonderfully cute and very spirited 3-month old apricot toy poodle, joined our family this past weekend after our local animal control folks found him wondering about the streets with a compound fracture of his left front leg.  The leg had gone completely necrotic which indicated that Brigh had been in this condition for quite some time.  Because the leg was not in any condition to be saved, our county shelter (Foothills Animal Shelter) made the critical decision to remove the leg.  As they were working on this little guy, I received a call from the shelter to see if I could foster him (I have done some critical needs fostering in the past...but generally these were severe abuse cases with some deep emotional scars).  I immediately said yes and took receipt of little Brigh.  The first couple of days were spent safe in his kennel, but it quickly became apparent that Brigh will not be slowed down by a silly old missing leg!!  He loves running and chasing toys, and I can happily report that his teeth work just fine (those sharp puppy teeth are brutal)!! His spirit and obvious joy for life has won over this crusty old heart and I have made the decision to make him a permanent part of the family!  With this decision comes the desire to learn as much as possible about the best ways to help Brigh live a long and healthy life...hence my joy at finding this community!!

Thank you so much for the warm welcome!  I will absolutely download the e-book, it sounds like a wonderful place to start!  Brigh joins my other foster failure, Bailey, who joined the household about a year ago as a severely abused pup who would not even walk or interact during his first few weeks.  The house also sports Harris, a wonderful male cat that we rescued from the street last year and Bear, my very special 18-year old aussie/sheltie mix who was given up by two families for being "too agressive" and has proven to be the most patient, loving dog!  Here is a photo of Brigh enjoying his first day out of the kennel enjoying the warm sun!

OMD!!! You forgot the CUTENESS ALERT!! Brigh is ADORABLE!! YAY for failed fosters!

You are a true Saint to give these sweet animals a loving forever home!

Brigh is going to touch so many hearts and be an inspiration to everyone he meets!

You've gotten the links from Jerry that are so helpful. Trying to make a puppy take it easy and not overdo is a huge challenge..as I'm sure you're already aware! Tryi g not to let them jump down off things is so important with front leg amps. Gentle massaging and stretching is helpful too. Scatter rugs for traction if you have hardwood floors helps. Also, always remember to give lpts and lots lf good daily scratches up and down the side Brigh .ay have a hard time scratching herself, I cludi g arou d her ears and her muzzle.

Cannot wait to see more pics of this cutie...and of all your pack! An 18 yr. young dog...WOW! Extra smooches to all!

Brigh sure hit the puppy lottery with you!

Love to all!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

What a cutie!!  Congratulations on your new foster failure!

He's a little guy, so you probably won't need to worry about raising the dishes lol

Rugs on the floor so he doesn't slip around, or little boots if he'll wear them.

It looks like you're already off to a great start!

OHHHHH! Adorable! Look at how happy he looks!

Well you are amazing, let me just say that. A pack like yours -- with an EIGHTEEN year old pup -- is truly one of a kind and very, very special! Thank you so much for joining us to share your magic, we look forward to getting to know you all.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
