Baxter is home! I'm so proud of him! He's getting around pretty well- a little wobbly, but he's starting to get his balance back.
He keeps trying to hike his leg to pee and stumbles. My smart boy, went over by the fence, hiked his leg, rested it on the fence and was able to pee without falling over.
He definitely is getting tired easily. A trip outside and he wants to cuddle and sleep. He's spending most of his time in my arms, layed on my chest- and I am oh so happy to be his pillow.
We put him in our bed last night- I wanted to keep an eye on him. It took a few hours for him to find a comfortable position and after he finally settled down, I didn't sleep much cause I was worried I would hurt him. I'm a tired Mommy!
He's all wrapped up. The vet wanted him to have padding over the site since he was already so active and we have the other two dogs. We go Wednesday to get it changed and I will see it for the first time. The link below is to his BooBoo Album on facebook. Open invitation for everyone to take a look at our mighty little boy- he has had some awesome designer wraps thanks to a very creative vet tech!

I'll keep everyone up-to-date on his progress. I've been spending my lunch break on here reading about everyone and getting to know all of you!

Welcome home Baxter!!

Mighty AND smart- I think you have your hands full!

Tired happens the first couple of weeks- but try and sleep when he does.  Things are so much better when you are rested.

I hope his recovery is uneventful!

baxter, we're glad you're home - home is for healing!!  we highly recommend adding several extended medicinal naps to aid in your recovery.  you might want to tell your mom medicinal naps can be good for her too.  love your pictures on fb, you sure are a good looking lad.  hope you have a speedy recovery with minimal 'bumps in the road'.

charon & gayle

Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included).  She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.

OMD, that fall-themed bandage is not only stylish, it's oh-so-seasonal!

He looks great. Yes, the tiredness and not sleeping cuz you are worrying about them in the night is all part of the package, but it will get better soon. Try to rest when he does!

Hope he continues to do well,
Jackie, Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Oh!  What wonderful news Baxter!!!  You look dashing in your colorful bandage!

Is anyone else thinking Baxter looks like a black version of Monkeybutt???

Baxter's first bandage change! His incision site is doing well, not "nasty" looking so yay for his anitbiotics! He is now sporting a purple wrap adorned with a light blue heart.
The hardest thing we have to deal with is stopping him from jumping up on everything. He acts like he hasn't been thru surgery. I know it's not good for him to jump up or down from the furniture, but he's so quick! And he was trying to get Diesel (our other dog) to play with him yesterday. Seriously, someone forgot to tell him he just lost a leg!!!

I also have noticed his other front leg is now turning inward when he walks- is this normal?

And yes, I think Baxter looks like Monkeybutt. What breed is Monkeybutt? We aren't sure what Baxter is- guessing a terrier mix. We just say he's unique.
And share please, how to put a picture inside the post.

He sounds like quite the little character! Must be very hard to keep him quiet - sounds like he certainly doesn't think he needs to be!

Yes, it is normal for the remaining front leg to start to turn in a bit, and almost look a little more centered under the chest. Here's a pic of Abby (with her big ol' cousin, Leo). You can see how her leg is turned a bit. If Baxter's leg looks too turned in, you might want to discuss it with the vet, but it is normal.

As for inserting pics, I know there's a link to instructions around here somewhere - but don't know where. I'm sure someone will chime in and point it out. (Basically you need the URL of the photo - insert it using the Tree icon that is above where you are typing a new post.)

All the best for Baxter's continued quick recovery!

Here are instructions for adding pictures to forum posts. If you don't already share photos somewhere online, the easiest way may be to start a blog so you can upload them to your media library.

Baxter had an excellent vet visit yesterday. He has truly not received the memo that he lost a leg! The hardest thing right now is getting him to slow down and stop trying to wrestle with the other dogs.

His incision looks good- I know cause I got my first look at it. I'm a little ashamed to admit I was facinated to see his shoulder bone moving like there was still a leg attached whenever he walked. With all the hair shaved, you can really see it well.

My question earlier about Baxter's remaining front leg being turned in: I too think it is him finding a new "center" of balance. It's not bad, just different.

Baxter is modeling a new bright orange wrap with yellow polka-dots- we can see him on the dark he's so bright! I've added new picks to his facebook album- seriously -he is B*R*I*G*H*T!
https://www.fac.....7c6c71a1d1

We go Mon/Tues to get his stitches out and at least one more wrap.

Great pics!  Love the "dots"!

It sounds like Baxter is just finding his center with the front leg.  My Comet, being born with 3 good legs, centered her front good leg and shifted her pelvis to where one of her back legs shifted under her a bit for balance.  She looked more deformed than she was!  When I got her, we xrayed her all over to ensure she wasn't terribly deformed.  She wasn't outside of her front leg.

And yes, I think Baxter looks like Monkeybutt. What breed is Monkeybutt? We aren't sure what Baxter is- guessing a terrier mix. We just say he's unique.

The monkeybuttster is a "terrier mix" too.  His DNA results, which I can't say how accurate they are - says he is mostly schnauzer and beagle....a schneagle!  And he does kind of look like the designer breed pics I have found of schneagles online.  He was a ghetto pup, so who knows.   He is long legged and fairly tall for a little guy.  He weighs 21lbs.

Is Baxter's hair like velcro?  Rocket MB's is!  It's hard to run even a soft brush through because it's so tangly.
