Anxious About Amputation!

Hi Everyone,

My 4 month old Goldendoodle has a severe elbow deformity, either due to a break at a young age that never healed properly, or a birth defect - we are not sure. The vet suggested 3 options: 1) take her to the vet college where we could discuss surgery, but it would cost us many thousands of dollars that I don't have (I am a university student), 2) amputate the front right leg, or 3) put her down. We have decided that amputation is the most affordable choice and the choice that would provide her with the best quality of life - fewer operations, quicker recovery, guaranteed removal of pain.

I am very anxious about all of this. She is so young and I'm sure she will adapt fine, but I am worried about what the next few weeks will be like with her after the surgery. Can anybody give me some reassurance that all of this will be fine, and maybe give me an idea of what to expect over the next month? By the way, this is a fantastic resource, especially for those who never dreamt they would have to go through something like this.

Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg, welcome. Please consider registering so your posts won't require approval. I hope you don't mind but I moved your post here, this is a great place to read about dogs like yours who lost a leg for reasons other than cancer.

What is your dog's name?

Try not to worry. I know that's hard but remember your girl will follow your lead. If you are strong and pawsitive, she will be too. Whatever feelings you project, she will absorb them and react accordingly. The best thing you can do right now is be strong, and check out Jerry's Required Reading List . You'll learn about our best tips and what to expect. And stay tuned, I know other Tripawds members will chime in here soon. I have to run now but will be back later. Hang tight and tell us more about your dog.

P.S. Thanks for the kind words about Tripawds. The reason we started it was we too were caught off guard as well. And you know what? Things turned out great! So hang in there OK? We're here to help.

Sorry you have to be here.....but there is not better place to be under the circumstanceThere have been many "youngsters" who have had to go through this for similar reasons. Almost all decide on amoutation for the exact same reasons you stated....the numerous potental surgeries, there is also a big chance for jnfection, etc.

Have you consulted with an orthopedic surgeon specialist? I know that, IF ppssible, they want to wait until at leat six mknths ...IF possible. You'll find so much i fo jn the links Jerry gave you, as well as a whole lotmof reassurance!

Recovery is no picnic andmpain management is important, but it is generally easier in puppies. Keeping them quiet for several weeks maybe your biggest challenge! Your puppy will be up and walking within 24 hrs. He will absoluteky amaze you!

When you can, we'd 'ove to see, pictures of your cute pup! Goldendoodles are soooooo cute!!

After yiu check out t the links, let us know if you have any questions, okay?

Stay connected to us. I kmow this is scarey and stressful. But you are doing ths FOR your pup, not TO your pup!, You think you 'ove and spoil your dog now.....that's just the tip of the iceberg! The bond with yiur tripawd and the lessins you learn from them.....unbelieveable!!

Sending best wishes!

Sally and Happy Hannah

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
