Levi has been fighting a sinus infection since sometime in May.  He went on a course of Amoxicillan for 1 week.  it seemed to clear it up but then quickly came back.  So on June 4 we changed the antibiotic to Doxycycline. (He had been taking one pill of this per day to help fight cancer already so we upped the dose).  I can't remember exactly but I think he was now taking 4 per day to try and kill the infection. Two doses later he had a seizure around 3pm and then another one at 9pm...So we took him off that thinking in might have been the med change.  We put him back on Amoxicillan for 10 days but same thing infection comes right back. (He has a green snotty nostril and eye discharge).  He does not tolerate the Amoxicillan well so he is very thin now 🙁 He has had no Seizures since we took him back off the doxycycline.

This past weekend he was on no antibiotics for Friday and Saturday.  He was really perky! So I know the meds make him feel terrible.  But by Saturday night his nose was totally clogged again.  So we now have him on Ciprofloxacin...two doses later, he had a seizure last night?  What the heck?  Coincidence? So this has happened twice with two different antibiotics (I asked my pharmacist and the two antibiotics are not in the same "drug family").  Could we be looking at a brain tumor?  Seems more likely because he already has cancer.  Anyone ever heard of antibiotics causing seizures?

Also, ever since the first seizure he is pretty uncooridnated.  Not terrible-but noticable.  This morning he seems really uncoordinated.

So we are trapped in this circle of feeling crappy from meds, then crappy from infection...and back and forth we go.  I think my husband and I are both thinking it's the end of the road...He is thin and miserable.  However, if there is some way to kick this infection I feel like we could have months left...This is all very frustrating. Of course our main vet is gone this week.  Someone else from the office should be calling soon.  Any thoughts you have would be appreciated.

Thanks

Levi was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma 7-7-11
Ampuversary 10-14-11
Lung Mets Discovered 1-4-12. Chemo seemed to not be working so we switched to Artemisinin and other supplements. In May, Levi developed a sinus infection and started having seizures. The cancer had moved to his brain. We let him go 6-26-12.

I never dealt with any of what you're describing with Max, but just wanted to send positive thoughts to Levi.  I'm sorry he's having these troubles.  Sending my best to you.

Add our pawsitive vibes to what's already coming your way.

Hang in there! Kisses from me to Levi, and Rita sends nose-pokes!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

I'm so sorry to hear that Levi is having a rough time.  I googled antibiotics and seizures--The Merck Manual Home Edition states that patients who take too much of ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin or imipenem may have seizures. Ingesting high levels of penicillin can also trigger seizures.  While it's possible, it looks like you have to take a high dose, which I assume Levi did not-- although if he's lost a lot of weight, maybe the dose was too strong.  My mother uses a neti pot for her sinuses and she swears by it-- may be worth a try for Levi.

Sending positive thoughts your way-- I hope you get the right meds to get rid of that sinus infection once and for all-- Levi is too majestic a dog and has fought  so very hard-- he needs to get past this and enjoy whatever time he has left.

I'm sorry I didn't see this earlier today, but I hope you got some answers for Levi. I hope the infection can be addressed so that Levi can enjoy his life. It's not fun when the stuff that's supposed to fix you up ends up taking you down a notch. Please let us know how he's doing.

Not good news for Levi...according to the vet its pretty ulikely it was antibiotic related. More likely what is going on is the cancer has spread everywhere. Maybe even in a nostril...thats why the infection gets better on antibiotics and then when we stop them it comes right back- the root of the problem never goes away.. There is probably something going on in his brain too which explains the uncoordination and the seizures. The final thing we can do is prednisone but i just dont see the point in buying us a few more weeks. If its time, its time. Going to post about that now under different topic.

Sorry for the late response but I agree it is unlikely that the antibiotics caused a problem.  Cancer or a fungal granuloma are most likely given his nasal discharge.
