Hello all,

My dog Chili is about 11 months old and had her front-right leg amputated by the Humane Society about a week before my girlfriend and i adopted her. We were told her elbow was broken when she was picked up as a stray in Oct '08 and they removed her leg due to the fact that it wasn't properly healing, in the first week of Dec. We found her around Dec 13.

We kept her walks short for the first few weeks, which wasn't hard cause it was very cold (-15 to -30 deg C) and she had most of her side shaved as well as her belly (from being spade).  She has done exceptionally well adapting to her 3 legs.  I have noticed that her one front leg has gained some considerable bulk (muscle) and i want to be sure she is getting enough nutrition to compensate for the extra work her body is doing to keep her stable.

She gets a high quality food with little grains, raw organic beef bones (which she loves) and sometimes we will throw some raw veggies in with her meals, she really likes carrots.

I have some glucosamine sulfate for myself and want to know if we can share the same product and how much i should give her. She is about 50lbs.  Are there any other supplements we may consider?

Thanks,

I'm not a vet, but can share our experience with Jerry. I'm sure Dr. Wiltzius will have more input.

You can read about the dog diet and supplements we gave Jerry after his amputation and see what we had to say about the SynFlex glucosamine supplement for pets that was an integral part of his diet. When we visited their factory, they told us the pet version of SynFlex is identical to the human formula with beef flavor added.

Thanks for joining the discussion!

A 50 pound dog needs at least 500 mg of glucosamine along with 400 mg of chondroiten sulfate for best results.  These are available in the same pill.  If she gets more than this it will not hurt her.  If she is eating a high quality dog food (like Evo) along with her raw diet then you do not need any other supplements.  If the diet is completely raw or home cooked then I would add a Pet Tab or other vitamin supplement daily.

Thanks for both your responses.

I will check out SynFlex but if its the same as mine then we'll split this bottle, til its gone anyway.

Cheers
