Adopted an 11mth old dog with front left amputation. He had his op last November after being hit by a car.  His remaining leg is quite bowed but he gets about ok and loves to run etc. He has 2/3  15 min walks a day. Should I get him wheels for support for the leg? He loves his walks and never seems to have `over done ` it. Just wanting to keep him active  for the future.smiley Can`t really afford an ortho surgeon tbh. Any help welcome. Thanks.

No. Not until it is time.

Review the various Tripawds News blog posts and videos about wheelchairs for tripawds to learn how getting a cart to soon, or trying to make one yourself can do more harm than good.

We strongly recommend consulting with a certified rehab tech (CCRT/CCRP) for a professional opinion. The Tripawds Foundation may even reimburse you for your first visit through the Maggie Moo Fund For Tripawd Rehab.

Find many more helpful tips, exercise demonstrations, and more how to videos for stretches, massage and conditioning to help keep your pup fit and strong in Loving Life On Three Legs , available in the Triapwds e-books library. Or search these forums above and search all blogs here .

Thank you for giving that sweet dog a great forever home! There's nothing more fun than spoiling a tripawd!

You have great links from the Admin Guy. If you haven't already done so, non slip rugs for traction over hardwood floors helps preventing face plants. If he's a larger dog, raised food bowls.help.prevent strain.

Would LOVE to see photos!

Extra hugs to him from allnof us...and save so.e for you too! Good job!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

I agree with everything Jerry said.  Let him be a dog and do fun dog things (I presume he is fully healed from the surgery).  He might never have any other issues but I would consider glucosamine when he gets older.

I was really worried about the other front leg as well because my weim was 10 when she had surgery. We quickly discovered what the perfect distance for walks was. Any less and she lost some of her strength, any more and she was over-extended. You will figure out the best system for your pup! She always wanted to go for a walk, but it was up to me to restrict her if necessary. But I think the biggest reasons we have found success for so long have been keeping her weight down, keeping her active, and as hard as it still is, I don't show her my fear or sadness. When she falls, I encourage her instead of comforting her. She's much tougher than I am! 🙂
