After I bring Jill home from her amputation are there any vitamins, supplements or special foods I should give Jill? Right now she just eats regular iams dry food and gets some friskies crunchy treats. She will be starting chemo in about four weeks. Thanks!

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. I usually prefer to feed a high protein/low-carb diet to animals fighting cancer.  Cats are obligate carnivores so they do better with this diet anyway.  Make sure that your cat's kidney values are okay prior to switching over to the new diet and do a very gradual switch (over several weeks) to prevent digestive upset.  I like EVO but there are many other good brands such as Wellness Core, Solid Gold, and Taste of the Wild.

Fish oil is also a good supplement for cancer patients.

I would ask your vet about starting gabapentin prior to amputation since I think it reduces the chance of phantom pain .  For cats the capsules can be opened and mixed with a flavored liquid or compounded through a special pharmacy.

Pam, is the fish oil palatable for cats or dogs?

Many cats and dogs will eat fish oil in liquid form but if they are fussy you can use the capsules.  I just add the capsules to my dogs' food and they eat them readily.
