I posted this under the "Beyond Cancer" category - but an admin suggested that I post it here instead....

Our story is long but I will try to keep it short.

I have a 9 year old greyhound, Boo, who broke her FR leg a little over 4 years ago.  After 2 surgeries there was a metal plate and a lot of screws put in it.  Although the 2nd surgery went well and did fix the leg, her paw and wrist area fused together (after being in a cast for SO long) and she never fully used the leg again.  (Just for balance every now and then).    Fast foward to just a few weeks ago – Aug 30, 2009 Boo was lying near the front door – got up suddenly – and broke her wrist, on the already bum leg!  We took her to the ER vet, they did xrays and confirmed the break on the wrist, right at the base of the plate.  They also saw something that looked like Osteosarcoma.  The next day we took Boo to our regular vet and they weren't so sure Boo had cancer.  They sent Boo's xrays and complete file to MSU for a third opinion!  Those folks couldn't confirm or deny the presence of cancer either!  (And they are the experts)!  However, we decided to amputate that leg since a) it couldn't be fixed without an very expensive rare surgery due to the plate that was already there and b) she hasn't used that leg in years.  The fact that there "might" be cancer only further confirmed our decision to remove the leg.  We had a biopsy done on the leg and braced ourselves to hear a bone cancer diagnosis.

Meanwhile, Boo is NOT recovering well from the amputation surgery…  The leg was amputated on Sept 8.  Surgery went well and she was sent home a few days later.  After a few days at home we noticed Boo was retaining a lot of fluid, oozing from her stitches, and had severe bruising.  We took her back to our vet so they could check her out.  They had gotten the biopsy results back and they were completely NEGATIVE for cancer (Yay)!  It was determined that the mass seen on the xrays was due to a vascular incident.  Once it was determined that we were dealing with a vascular issues and not cancer it shed some light on why she wasn't healing as expected.  On Sept 14 Boo had another surgery.  Our vet removed more tissue, re-stitched the area, and 2 drainage tubes were put in.  Surgery went well and a few days later Boo was sent home.  The next morning Boo's stitches had busted open in one small area.  We brought her back to the vet and the they told us Boo had a capillary embolism (clot) that burst and caused her stitches to break open.  (Another complication due to this vascular issue)!  ANOTHER surgery is scheduled for today (Sept 21) to remove more tissue, re-stitch her, and put in new drainage tubes.

I know we made the right decision to amputate the leg.  But now, I am wondering how many post-op surgeries are they going to have to do before her body kicks in and starts to heal correctly!  Her temp is normal.  She is eating and drinking fine.  (She's even pooping fine)!  She has tons of energy and has adjusted to 3 legs just fine!  (She's been using 3 legs for YEARS already)!  They just cannot get her incission to close properly!  Has anyone ever had anything even close to a senario like this?  If so, how many surgeries did it take and how long was the recovery process?  We are WAY PAST the normal 2 week recovery period!  (To think in normal cases the stitches would be removed tomorrow!  HA!  We're still put new ones IN)!   Help!  A little advice…anyone?!

Hi Amandaboo,

You are such a cutie pie! THanks for joining us here. We are sorry to hear about your complications, and hope that things pick up soon. It's pretty cool that you're energetic and hungry though, thank Dog for that! Sounds like you have some pretty pawesome vets and surgeons too. Where are you getting all of that done?

I wish I had some good advice, but really, the only thing I can think of is that a while back, we posted this article, Postoperative Bleeding in Greyhounds, that might help you out.

Hang in there. Although 2 weeks is "normal" for recovery, one thing we've learned here is that all dogs are so different in how things go for them. What is normal for one is not for another. So try not to compare, and just take things one pawstep at a time.

Keep us posted OK?

Have they tested her for Von Willebrand's Disease?   This causes excess bleeding. If she is not blleeding a lot post-op but is having issues later then  she could have hypothyroidism or vasculitis.  Greyhounds run low on their thyroid tests anyway so a thyroid panel with free T4 and TSH is needed to diagnose this condition.  Vasculitis can cause inflamed tissues and also slow healing and may be treated with pentoxifylline or with prednisone.  Vasculitis is not that common but can be seen in this breed.

Given her swelling, I'd also talk to the vets (and maybe Pam can chime in here) about adding bromelain and arnica montana which are natural supplements that help with swelling and bruising.  I took them after some major surgery and swear by them, especially the bromelain!  Bromelain is derived from pineapples, and I don't know where arnica montana is.  I've read how they can be used in dogs, but don't know the dosages.  I also don't know if there are any contraindications so definitely check with your vet.  Sorry she's having so many issues!  Seems like she's been through so much already, but at least she's handling it well!  So are you!!!

Oh Yeah! We are very familiar with thyroid problems! She has been on thyro-tabs for a long time now. They test her about twice a year. Boo is also on Purina NF diet, to improve her kidney function. She's a "hot mess" these days! And yet she is still the sweetest little grey you'd ever meet! She is full of energy and absolutely LOVES people...and attention!!

Yesterdays surgery went very well. They actually saw signs of healing (from the inside). They are optimistic that if they can keep the insission closed, we'll be on our way in the right direction. Also, they took out two drainage tubes and only put one back in. (And they hope to be able to remove that one in a few days). It appears we are making progress.... but history tells us Boo does great for the first 24/48 hours - it's days 3 and 4 that get us into trouble!!

Thanks for the vasculitis tip! I'll look into that.

Just a quick Boo update...

Drainage tubes were removed today (Thurs) - no complications thus far...! The stitches have stayed closed, since Monday, with no signs of infection or embolisms. If there are no surprises, the vet told us we can bring her home tomorrow (Fri) afternoon/evening.

We're hoping the healing streak can continue from the comfort of home sweet home!

Amanda,

I'm glad to hear that Boo is finally starting to heal!  How stressful all of this must be for all of you.  Keep us informed.  Boo will be in my prayers.  Even though he is having a hard recovery celebrate it is not cancer!

SURPRISE!

Boo's stitches busted open today near where the drainage tube was removed yesterday. We made it to day 4! The rest of her is still healing nicely. (They are even seeing new pink skin in some spots) This new opening is small and they still want us to come by for a visit tonight...and if we are feeling brave, take her home. I guess she's getting pretty picky about what food she will/will not eat and they are thinking that if she's in her home environment she might eat her normal NF food again. Also, they would like to compare how well she recovers at home vs. at the vets. She has been there for almost 3 weeks! (I can't blame Boo for getting tired of the surroundings - I'd be ready to come home too)! We'll see what she looks like and determine if we can give her the care she needs from home (open wound and all) and maybe, just maybe, still bring her home tonight. ...at the very least I am curious to see what "good" actually looks like. We haven't seen a single hint of what "beginning to heal" looks like since this all began. Also, I'm excited to see our baby again! We've been apart for way too long!

We DID bring Boo home on Friday night. She has a small opening, about the size of a pea, that the vet told us might get as large as a quarter...but so far, it's still the size of a pea! This third go around they added silvadene cream (applied three times daily) to all the other meds she's taking (cephalexin, clindamycin, rimadyl, tramadol) and I think it is making all the difference! It's been 3 weeks since amputation and one week since our last surgery. Boo is finally home and starting to heal! Next goal...getting her off some of these meds! It's a part time job just keeping up with it all! ...not to mention Boo is getting wise to all our tricks!

Thanks for all the advice and support! (I look forward to posting on forums that aren't so crisis medical driven)!

Hi Amanda!  I see you're from GR.  Too bad I didn't see this before I moved, or we could've gotten our doggies together for a play date 🙂  Where did you go for your surgery?  We went to Cascade Hospital for Animals and had Dr. McBride as our surgeon.  If you don't go there and ever need a place, they were wonderful (they were actually recommended to us by our regular vet at Northeast Cat and Dog).

Poor Boo!! I hope the silvadene helps with the healing. I know it worked miracles on me when I had post-op complications from a major surgery. Part of my incision was not healing right, and the skin started to slough off. It was horrible! But then my surgeon had me apply the silvadene cream... and my skin started to grow back... it took a while, but it worked for me. Hope it does the trick for your Boo!!

Bummer about the move! My husband LOVES Great Danes, so those would have been fun play dates for everyone! We just used our regular vet for Boo's surgeries. Dr Bennett at The Animal Clinic (28th St & Division) did them. They can do just about everything there! Dr Bennett is wonderful...as is the rest of the staff. Even after all that Boo has been through she still loves going to the vet. (I have heard good things about the Cascade Animal Hospital from others as well...I may have to check them out someday).

Also it's good to hear another positive report about the silvadene cream! I know I'm a believer!
