Hank is having neuromas. He yelps and act like he got shorted. It's really sad to see. It's seems like it's happening more often. I'm a pack of nerves. Not sure what to do. I phoned the vet that did the surgery and they said he might need to be reopened to reattach his nerves. I don't want Hank to be in pain... crying

Is he on gabapentin for nerve pain?  I have not heard of re-attaching nerves to get rid of pain because once the ends are severed the brain receives the pain message and that can be hard to reverse.  For this reason many vets are giving gabapentin and using MLK (morphine/lidocaine/ketamine) pain drips prior to and during surgery to try to prevent the pain wind-up in the first place.

Yes he's on gabapentin 100mg twice a day. Since I found out about the osteo. When I phoned the vet they said they would have to reopen him. Now Hank is very cautious of every steps he makes and is even refusing chicken and wieners.

Phantom pain can be hard to deal with.  Opening him up again will probably not help unless he has a seroma (fluid pocket).  Ask your vet first but a dog that size can easily be on 300 mg gabapentin 3 to 4 times daily if needed.

Phoned the vet again today. They are making a new prescription of gabapentin and another one that I can't recall the name off. They also said they would like the external medicine rather than opening him up again.

Hank got prescribed amantadine (200mg once a day) and they upped his gabapentine to 200mg twice a day. I hope this will help. That makes a lot of pills at the end. 
Hank didn't have any episodes of neuroma so I hope it's getting better.

Amantadine does help reduce the nerve spasms and is safe to give along with gabapentin.  I hope he responds quickly!

Thanks Jerry. He seems to be quite normal these days. I'm encouraged. The only thing that seems to have changed is the fact that he's liking living in the house with us versus his outside enclosure which he loved. He put his name on the oversize love seat where he spend his time. I have to force him off there! I'm quite happy with the turn out right now.

I'm sure once he's back to 100 percent he will enjoy being outside more. For now, enjoy eachother's company and give him a big hug from us. This is such a great update.
