Because of Porthos' hips and knees I was wondering if I should give Porthos a little muscle relaxant in the evenings? he is doing really well so far but im a little worried he may strain his back because of the new adjustments to walking.

Also Ive ordered a magnetic collar for him and was wondering if it is ok to use as he has a microchip in the back of his neck. It had only just occurred to me!

Thank you!

Comet was on muscle relaxers at night when she was a senior.  It's the one that starts like methocar--something.

I think it helped a lot!  (also Rimadyl) Is it something the vet prescribed?  It certainly won't hurt Porthos to have one at bed time.  I did it for about a year.  (she was probably 12 years old then)

Hmmmm. I've never heard of magnetic collars.  I wonder too if it will interfer.  Hmmmm.

Ive just looked up Methocarbomal (was that it?) I think I might email our specialist at the CSU and see what she thinks, Porthos is doing so well at the moment that I would hate for him to go down hill because of sore muscles.

This is the collar Ive orderd http://kryton.c.....egoryID=28  I have no idea if it will help but im willing to try anything.

I had actually forgotten he had the microchip until the other day I was checking for lumps and found it, I thought it was a tumor and was FREAKING out! then remembered he has the chip!

Yes!  It's methocarbomel.   It's a human muscle relaxer so you can have your vet write a RX for a regular pharmacy.

As a side note:  When I blew out a neck disc on myself, my neck doctor gave me SOMA instead of methocarbomel.  I asked him why not methocarbo and he said that SOMA works better.  Comet had already passed by then but had she still been alive I would have asked my vet if SOMA could be prescribed.  So, perhaps you can asked if SOMA is okay for dogs?  Methocarbo is fine if SOMA isn't good for dogs.  It did help her.

Good luck!

You can ask about methocarbamol but I usually only use it if there is a problem.  I tend to use more gabapentin for chronic pain.

I am not sure about the magnet but I know that the chip does not interfere with an MRI so you are probably okay.

Thanks Pam!

I know our vet did order some gabapentine in to the country for us, so I know its there if we need it.

Just remember both the drugs make them groggy!  So which ever one you go on...it's better at bed time!
