Oh I'm sorry, I forgot that you're working with AMC (and that east coast prices are certainly higher than most places).

I'm glad you're working with such great doctors, you have a huge team on your side. Hopefully the decreased Gaba dosage will work. Keep us posted.

Bowing down to you in awe yet again!! Dtermination and love are two mighty potent "drugs" you're infusing Martha with right now!!

Ueah, it was the Metronidolaze I was referrng to with the unsteadiness, lackof muscle coo-ordination, neurological stuff. Assoon as I can, I'm goingto search for the post Liz made about Roxy.

Okay, sigh of relief over here that all the radiographs have come back good....relatively speak g for a "mature" gal. Even though these "senior" things don't look too bad on the radiographs...they could still be causing her more disco fort than expected because of the srgery and all the adjustments she's trying ro make. To me, it seems this could be a huge clue and maybe you can start attacking that angle......maybe acupunture...laser theray (double check me on this as I may, yet again, be completely wrong...but it seems so e dogs have had good results with cold laser therapy)...Adeuan injections (you may already be doing that)

I know the focus with the vets is on other "issues"..the liver, etc., but darn if this walking thing just sou ds completely separate and more related to surgery recovery, the arthritis, hip dysplasia, fused discs...my goD...they whould be looking at that oo as far as treatment..especiall "alternative" Yeah, don't think the ultra sound would make a difference either.

Amalia, it DOES sound loke you and Martha are moving forward bit by bit! The eating has picked up and that is great!!

One ore thought...although you jave no choice but tomuse a sling...that could be causing hesitancy too. Many dogs, and my Hapoy Hannah included, pretty much freeze up when you use a sling. but I kowyou jave to for now.

Okay, the "dangling tongue". I'm sure they've checked her mouth everyti e for any issues there. This could be aother "glory" of "aging" too. Getting old is just not fun!! That could be something nureo too...I would say drug related, but since you're lowering the dose, I doubt it...unless it goes along with withrawal.

Keep hanging tough!! Goodness jnows, you are leaving no stne unturned and yoj and Marthat are givingit your all! And we are all hoping for the pay-off to continue more and more now!clap

Sending you so much love and support.

Sally and Happy Hannah

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

martha's doing better. all pain med lowered--esp GABApentin. finally heard senior dogs may be be "sensitive". certainly wish i'd been warned or the dosing lowered before weakening her as it did. 1800 mg. a day for a 13 yr old dog? i'm upset. anyway, looks like antibiotics are heling, too. still son't if it was the liver or some bacterial infection somewhere…PAM, she' on 900mg a day currently. thank you! ...and, hoping to get it lower.

we're now dealing with edema on her remaining rear leg. anyone have any experience with it? also going to AMC alternativemed/rehab. consultation today. currently she can not walk. but can eat and know what's going on around her. a change for good.
thanks, kind people.

Sorry to be late!  At 81 pounds the safe low dose of metronidazole is closer to 250 mg twice daily (7 mg/kg).  The higher dose of 500 mg twice daily is the upper limit for normal dogs.  If she is doing  better then I would not worry but if she in fact has liver failure (not just elevated liver enzymes) then the lower dose is preferred.  Metronidazole can cause neurologic side effects in some dogs which can include weakness and ataxia (wobbliness).  I would run it by your vet in case she is still weak.  Your other option is to replace the drug altogether and use amoxicillin 500 mg twice daily.
