My girl Shelby is fighting hemangiosarcoma and has had 8 total chemo treatments. She started with Adriamycin and once her leg was amputated a few months ago and we discovered the cause of the initial fracture on that was also hemangiosarcoma, we started carboplatin. Either the cancer or the chemo (or both) have made her quite anemic (I think) and she's on an iron supplement. She was taking some natural iron supplement but that wasn't enough so they switched her this last week to 1/2 a tablet of ferrous (?). I don't know if it's the combo of her recent chemo treatment (she had that Thursday) or the addition of the pill but she is definitely not feeling well. She was drooling a little last night and shaking so I brought her to the ER where, of course, she was 100% fine. They checked her out and sent her home with instructions to not give her anymore of the iron until I talk to her oncologist. The drooling did stop but she's definitely not feeling right - she is very finicky w/her food options (not normal for her) and would only eat some gluten free pasta - which I guess is bland like rice would be. I got her to eat a couple of biscuits but thankfully we have lots of options since she won't eat all of them. She appears interested in food and when I offer it to her, she turns her nose up but is still begging. She ate 1 sliver of banana this a.m.

I know that for me iron pills upset my belly and I cannot tolerate them and I wonder if that is Shelby's issue too. She is drinking water fine, maybe a little bit more than usual (when I offer her food and she sniffs at it and rejects it, she drinks her water instead). IT is also very hot and very dry where we live even though that has never bothered her in the past.

So my question is - should I start cooking more red meat for her? I have been cooking for her and I have a cookbook for dogs but I haven't been emphasizing red meat. I am tempted to run and get her a plain burger tonight since I'm not sure she has had enough to eat over the last couple of days (maybe 1 cup of gluten free pasta and a handful of cookies). I left her food in her dish today but I doubt she will eat it while I am gone.

Otherwise, she seems fine - less shaking today, less drooling. She does have anti-nausea pills and we took them but this has probably been the hardest treatment I have seen for her and it breaks my heart to see her uncomfortable!

My doc had chuck on an iron supplement that was liquid. .liquid tinic? It helped quite a bit. . And didn't seem to have any tummy upset issues on it. It was beef flavor so I put it in his food. ..We got it from our vet. . But they sell it on Amazon too. Always worth asking the vet first. ..

I dont know anything about iron :)

But I just wanted to say hang in there Shelby! I'm positive this is just from the chemo and she'll feel better in no time!

Sending you lots of hugs,

Erica & Jill

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Thank you for this info. I'm waiting on her onco to call me back since I really think the meds she is on now are really upsetting the belly. Thankfully her PCP (normal vet) said that it is probably the meds that made her drool a bit (just drops really and only noticed since they fell on my feet and her mouth felt 'wet'). And while I may not be the best driver in the world, I always drive w/care when Shelby is in the car so her theatrics in the back seat last night were probably due to nausea not my driving. :-( I just have to believe there is an alternative form of iron.

Thank you Erica and Jill!!! I am pretty convinced it was chemo related too (and iron thrown in there). She was literally fine (considering) up until dinner last night. Or she really wants me to go get her a burger!

So the on-call onco called me back tonight and basically told us to lay off the iron pills until Shelby gets back to normal and we'll see if we can add them back in. told me that we did chemo and add those meds at the same time so it's hard to tell what's causing her issues.

We are increasing her anti-nausea meds for the next couple of days. Back on Flagyl since she had diarrhea tonight. She ate 1/2 cup ground sirloin for dinner + some gluten free pasta. I bought rice for her to eat tomorrow. Got her some new cookies (grain-free ) that she likes. No more dripping from her mouth and she seems 'better'. Fingers crossed it was the perfect storm of the iron and the chemo.

We'll still need to address the anemic thing at some point but for tonight, I am really glad she will eat some things for me. I don't mind giving her ground sirloin at all. But want to make sure her diet is balanced. Back to my cookbook! :-)

The supplement is called Pet-tinic and most vets carry it.  It also has B vitamins and is a liver-flavored syrup.

Thank you so much, Pam! I'm going to ask her vet about switching her to that. She's almost back to 'normal' and I don't want to put that iron back in her system...

Spoke with her oncologist yesterday who truly believes that it was a mixture of adding new pills + the chemo treatment that caused the intense reaction in Shelby. She would like to me try the iron supplements one more time ONCE Shelby returns to her 'normal' ways (i.e., eating, energy levels, pooping normal). I hate to do it but I know I need to make sure her iron is supplemented since sadly, even iron-rich foods aren't enough for Shelby. The good news is - if we have the same reaction, we will stop the pills immediately and try something new (like what Pam suggested).

Shelby had her chemo one week ago (today) and she's feeling MUCH better ... she was playful this a.m., eager for food, snuggles, cuddles, and was begging up a storm. She has decided she's no longer interested in baby carrots but ate cucumber and cookies for breakfast. This was her dinner last night:

1981925_10152920990744057_1298219264_n.jpg

1/2 cup ground sirloin, 1/2 cup white rice, steamed spinach. She ate 95% of it... I had to get creative to get her to eat ALL the spinach (made her little 'wraps' with deli meat and the spinach/rice on the inside). Mainly because her other meds, probiotics, mushroom therapy and fish oil, were all mixed in and I wanted her to get them all in her belly! My dog has never been a picky eater and for the most part, she still is not. However, she no longer likes leftovers and I have to create her something "newish" each night!

I think that's a good plan. Unfortunately the process of eliminating and then reintroducing foods, supplements, etc. one at a time is the only way to know what's causing problems. I have my paws crossed that things go well with this next go-around.

Hey her dinner looks pretty good! Ever consider opening up your own doggy diner for all the neighborhood dogs? ;)

So we put Shelby back on her iron pills after getting over the hump of the chemo and almost immediately I noticed some changes in her demeanor. She didn't appear constipated (that was all normal) and no real nausea but she seemed different. Started up with the pacing and anxious behavior at night (inside/outside a million times). And back in my bathroom.

So as a beta test, I didn't give her the iron tablet tonight. So far (and it's still early) she seems fine. I HATE these FLIPPING iron pills!!! Is it at all possible 1/2 tablet of the Ferrous Sulfate -325 mg is doing something to her? Our morning routines have doubled/tripled since she has to (or acts like she has to) go out many times to the point of pure panic that she's afraid I am going to leave her.

Her poop is normal, consistent, regular (3 - 4X a day which is normal for Shelby) and not loose at all.

We'll go back to her vet next week and I'll ask about the alternative supplements listed here BUT I wanted to know if my suspicions about that little red pill could be right. I hate seeing her uncomfortable and I hate seeing her in my bathroom! Thank you!

Maybe the iron is giving her belly pains? Has youR vet suggested a transfusion? It costs a bit ($300+or-) but is a real quick pick me up. Just a thought. Ty's iron was very low and that is one thing they did for him. We are not sure why he was anemic, as he only had one chemo treatment.

I definitely think the iron pills give her an upset belly and make her anxious or something as when she gets them, she goes back into my bathroom at night (after pacing a lot). As you might remember, Shelby tends to use my bathroom as her 'safe' zone and while it doesn't hurt her - it upsets me since I know she must not feel great.

Shelby had a transfusion the day after her amp since her red blood (I think) dipped so slow and it did perk her right now. Sadly, since Shelby has hemangiosarcoma, which I think is a blood cancer, I think the cancer/chemo affect her red blood cells hard. I am hopeful we can switch the meds and get her something easier on the belly. And in the meantime, she's getting ground sirloin, spinach and carne asada for dinner - a lot!!!

Iron pills can cause stomach upset even if given with food.  I would ask your vet about Pet-tinic since that does not seem to cause issues for most dogs.  Has your dog had an iron blood level to determine if she really needs that much or is it just because she is anemic?
