We are starting Chuy on Glucosamine supplement as a precaution for the future, being a Tripawd and all. Our other two dogs, Gretchen is getiing older and a large breed mix, and Anka a 1 yr. old Ger. Shep. with possible hip dysplasia (we'll know more after next week's x-rays) will also be taking it.
Now on to the question......All of the liquid Glucosamine supplements we have found either have Corn syrup or Fructose in them. Everything I have read says that this can lead to diabetes in dogs. Corn syrup and fructose is on the list of "Do Not Feed" foods for dogs.
Is this true and if it is, what do you recommend? The first vet we have talked to did not recommend anything! We are going to see another vet next week, but would like more than one opinion on this matter.
Thanks in advance!
Eleanor
Chuy, showing everyone that Tripawds do everything 3 times better than regular dogs!
We gave Jerry SynFlex beef flavored liquid glucosamine for dogs. It contains no fructose, corn syrup or any other sweeteners. See the link for a complete list of certifed ingredients.

I looked at the ingredients for Synflex, there is fructose in it. It is listed as an inactive ingredient.

Trouble takes K-9 Liquid Health – Glucosamine & HA for dogs.
It specifically says no sugars, no beef or shellfish, starch, wheat, salt, yeast, milk or soy. I get it from e-vitamins.com

Sorry for the oversight about SynFlex, here's info for Liquid Health from evitamins.com:

just curious as to why you are doing liquid? Is that better absorbed? I actually have been giving Whiskey dasaquin and gave it to Magic after his surgery...for whiskey it was a suggestion made by some breeders (who apparently don't know their asses from a hole in the ground) for his ears (all his siblings had ears up before he came here back on July 3!!!!!! his may finally be starting up, NOW)....I have now had two vets politely hide their snickers as they told me it won't hurt him but it certainly isn't going to help the cartilege.....Not sure I am going to continue when the bottle is done....but can't see dumping what I have....maybe I should put it on angel exchange...
Didn't mean to hijack the thread, but was curious about the liquid
I chose the liquid simply becuase it was the one I FINALLY found that didn't have shellfish.

I was looking at a liquid because it is easily put right on the regular food as usually it is flavored with beef or chicken.

I too give Mackenzie liquid Glucosamine – the K9 Glucosamine by Liquid Health and have for several year now (Shanna's brand.) It has a different label from the one that Jerry shows (Hip and Joint Formula – I just noticed that it does contain shellfish and beef). I was told that it's easier to absorb and you get better results. I put this on her food – it doesn't seem to have any flavor to it. I always wondered though when they're eating do they really consume it all because it is liquid. But this is what my pet store recommends. And looking at the ingredients I don't see anything about fructose or corn sweeteners. Geesh I didn't even know that pet stuff could contain that! I guess I need to start reading ingredients on this type of supplement too.
My sweet golden Mackenzie. She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2 although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home. She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009. She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes. I love you Mackenzie!

I agree that I would avoid corn syrup/fructose if possible. I use the Dasuquin tabs for my dogs and they eat them like treats!
Whiskey, I would be careful supplementing too much glucosamine to a growing large breed puppy since some sources say this can mess with their development.
Pam
Thanks Pam...I think I will stop it....my vet felt it wouldn't do any harm but it certainly wouldn't do what was suggested, so there really is no reason to be giving it at 6 mos...his breeder also gives vit. c from weaning to forever and my vet says careful careful with the c because of tummy issues....
I'm not smart enuf to be fooling around with supplements...one of the reasons I have NEVER considered the BARF diet...(course out of 22 vets, at our practice, there are TWO who are mildly in favor of a raw diet...) I just don't have the knowledge nor the inclination to do the research to put all the stuff in the food that they are supposed to have....
THanks again Pam...your imput is invaluable!!
Thanks Pam. I was worried about the corn syrup/fructose thing. We wound up throwing out the remainder of the supplement we bought away. Guess we will wait until Thurs. when Anka has her x-rays done and see what Dr. Sam has to say about the supplements too. We have heard that Dasuquin works pretty well, but aren't sure it will be right for a 1 yr. old Shep. Chuy is old enough for it to help him with joint problems. (not that he has any yet)

I'd like to find out what the vet says too. We've been debating about whether or not to start Wyatt on it (he's 21 months).
