Likely melanoma--how to proceed?

Dakota, almost 11, lost his front leg to a soft tissue sarcoma almost 21 months ago. He's done pretty well physically, considering he has some arthritis and discomfort from that. Emotionally is a different domain.

A few months ago we tried a round of acupuncture from an integrative vet. I pointed out a spot on his rear foot. It looks like a small, black mole, kind of rubbery. She said it was probably a benign melanoma, nothing to worry about. It hasn't grown.

Now, though, he has developed these black spots on his belly. I've got a picture here. I assume they are likely melanomas, and since they sprang up rather quickly and are not rubbery (some are slightly raised), they likely are not benign. Is that a correct presumption? One appears irritated, like it wants to be a sore. I made an appointment for him to be seen tomorrow.

So what should I do if they are melanomas? If they are malignant, should they be removed? Would they grow quickly and kill him? At 11, would old age or something else likely take him first? What about even identifying them? Do we want to do something aggressive? What should I subject him to?

If I sound hesitant, it's because Dakota does not do well with change of any kind. He has adjusted to 3 legs, but finding I've moved furniture makes him nauseous and anything out of order is tremendously distressing for him. I try to avoid as much intervention simply to keep him from being miserable. If someone told me that it was much more likely for him to die from kidney failure and old age than a melanoma, my course would be obvious. I don't know if they are slow or fast. Any help is appreciated.

Shari

Obviously not a vet, just wanted to say I hope this is nothing serious, just some "weirdness" that has popped up on your boy's belly.  Sending positive thoughts your way!

Hope it's nothing. We love Dakota and want him around a long time!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

I'm sorry I can't offer you any suggestions. Hopefully it is nothing serious.  You and Dakota are such a big support to many of us, offering wonderful words of wisdom. He has to be OK.

He IS ok!

We had a late afternoon vet appointment and took a laundry list to talk about. The black belly bumps appear to be hemangiomas, not hemangiosarcomas. Only one of the bumps could be aspirated, but it was definitely a pretty bloody thing once she started poking around it. The others are too flat to aspirate. So we were cautioned to watch it, maybe photograph the area weekly to monitor it for a month or so, and do nothing.

Dakota's belly has been looking really pink to me lately but I thought it was my imagination. Lo and behold, by the time we got to the vet today, his belly had begun to peel. It looked like a sunburn. She mentioned a couple of possibilities, mostly chicken and egg stuff (which came first, the bumps or the pink belly?), and I will use a topical steroid spray I have. She thinks it will resolve on its own.

The third thing we did was go ahead and start treating Dakota's lupus again, as it appears to be trying to flare up. It's not awful, but I don't want it to be. I hate putting him on daily meds forever, but she told me that she has tried several holistic approaches to lupus and nothing has worked except the tetracycline or doxycyline combined with niacinimide. At least it's cheap.

Speaking of cheap, she must be independently wealthy. Anybody in the Boulder-Denver area needing an affordable integrative vet, contact me and I'll refer you. Our office visit today including the aspiration and cytology was a whopping 37 bucks. And the vet tech and Dr. Brown together spent an hour with us.

Thanks for the warm and fuzzy thoughts about D. He hates the vet, but take a look at the cushy digs this one has!

Here is Double D (as Pegz mom calls him) on Dr. Brown's comfy exam room bed.

Yay Dakota!!!  I'm so happy it was nothing!  Hopefully his road will be less bumpy from here on out!  And yes, you're right about your vet:  I can't even get in our vet's door for less than $45!!!

D, surely you get enough attention that you don't have to scare mom! oh-my

Glad to hear everything is good.  Treating the lupus is probably a good thing.  Anything to keep him feeling great.

Oh fantastic! Don't scare us like that Dakota! Isn't your life dramatic enough with Evelyn around?

Your vet sounds terrific. Be sure to post her info in our "Veterinary Referrals" forum topic. Thanks for the scoop.
