Hi everyone. Zane's mom, Jenny here.

Zane had his amp 6 weeks ago. His incision has healed beautifully now
(finally) with the exception of one hole on the bottom of his incision
line. This area had the largest concentration of fluid. The hole is like
a donut with the inside opening about the size of a nickel.

He still has some squishy fluid build up, more some days than others.
He also has a lot of fluid in his groin area some days. I am thinking
thta the tumbling onto his stump side aggravates teh healing and cause
more inflammation.

Our vet has suggested that we do hydrotherapy- daily flusing with
water. We've used medi honey around the area and then covered the
stickiness with a large band aid. It looks adorable- like we are trying
to patch an amputation. There is some serum drainage and then yesterday,
we noticed a more blood red drainage. Nothing to indicate infection,
however.

Have others had problems with the wound not fully closing?

Six weeks does seem like a long time but there could be an undissolved suture causing a nidus of infection.  The body will gradually work the infection out but it might take a while if the suture or infection is deep in the amp site. The only way to get it to heal faster would be to perform another surgery but if he is feeling fine (no fever, etc) then that is probably not necessary.

My vet shaved the area yesterday and really manipulated it good to feel for any hidden staples. I had removed 3 staples that the surgeon has missed. His hair is growing inside of the hole so we are going to try to keep that trimmed down to while this continues to drain.

Figured it would be our luck that one would be buried in there. He is reactive to suture lines and some metals. We only discovered the cancer because I twisted the arm of my favorite otho surgeon (he's done 6 acl surgeies on my pack). I told him I wanted all remaining hardware (which was some wire and a pin- the rest came out on it's own 2 weeks after being put in) removed from that knee in hopes of finding the cause of continued lamenesss. He didn't feel the hardware was causing a problem but I knew something was not right. He biopsied the knee joint and asked me if I even wanted him to send it in- I said of course. None of us, doctors included, ever suspected cancer.

So life goes on 🙂  He's always been an extremely slow healer so we will just continue to keep an eye on this.
