I adopted my 1 and 1/2 year old 13 pound terrier mix about 6 weeks ago.  He was hit by a car about 6 months ago and had to have his right rear let removed.  He was doing great until about 2 weeks ago when he didn't want to walk.  The vet said that his left rear hip was trying to dislocate.  He is on anti inflamatory and pain meds and restricted to his kennel.  When we get him better are there excercises that can help strengthen his rear hip? I really Really don't want to put him through another surgery.

One of the best things to strengthen rear leg muscles is walking up hills.  Walking through knee-high water also is good. Did your vet say if there is a deformity in the hip?  Most hip luxations are secondary to trauma but there are diseases such as hip dysplasia or Legg-Perthe's disease that may benefit from surgery or a visit to a professional rehab vet/technician.

Welcome efhaddad

You may want to consider starting a new topic and telling us all about your little one.  We'd love to learn more and see pics.

Hopefully Pam answered your question (she is a vet).

Oh poor puppy! Please take it easy and don't do a lot of exercise until you find out what's going on.

Pam is an awesome vet. I agree, a visit to a rehabilitation vet might be in order. This is definitely the fastest way to find out what's going on and work on getting him stronger. See our CARE videos about rehab for more info.

And yes, do tell us more in another topic, like "Beyond Cancer," which is all about dogs who lost their leg for reasons other than bone cancer.
