Oh Rio, I know you are kicking the daylights out of cancer. Keep it up!

I hope the swelling is nothing. It did remind me a little of when Tripawds member Captain Jack experienced similar symptoms, which you can read about here. Paws, fingers and toes crossed that it's not the same thing, but I just wanted to let you know about his situation, just in case.

Lotsa love coming your way girlfriend, I hope you are feeling good and being your old usual self.

Rene, thanks for posting that link. Rio's situation isn't quite like what Jack was going through. So far, the swelling is not inside the abdominal wall, but just in the skin. We heard from our vet, and are probably gonna talk to the oncologist early next week. I just wish I had a manual on what to expect as this frikkin' disease progresses...

Please keep us posted...if the edema is not bad then you might want to save the diuretic for a later date.

Thanks again, Dr. Pam. I talked with my vet and she basically said the same thing. We're gonna wait for now on the diuretic and see how things look in a few days -- that'll give me time to talk with the oncologist and internist about possible other factors such as Rio's Cushings.

I just wanted to post an update, in case other folks run into this same situation down the road. I spoke with Rio's oncologist and it's her opinion that Rio's edema is due to the fact that her lymph system is no longer fully functional. The tumor that is in her inguinal lymph node (which should have probably been removed with the leg -- ahhhh, hindsight!) is inhibiting it's ability to move the lymphatic fluids out of her system and so they are collecting in the loose skin of her belly. The good news is that the swelling and fluid build up are NOT inside her abdominal or chest cavities at this point in time.

The doctor said that for now, doing nothing is an appropriate course of action. A diuretic could stress her kidneys and bladder more than it benefits her (especially since she's had some issues with that due to her Cushings) at this point. Although we may eventually go that route if the swelling moves into her remaining hind leg or chest, for now we're gonna hold off and take a wait-and-see approach.

'Do Nothing' is one of my personal favorite courses of action.  I try to spend some time on it everyday big-grin.

I'm glad it is not a huge concern right now and Woo can continue her Woo-ness.

Hey Whoo, hang in there!  We hope the fluid goes away soon!

Mary and Lucy

Lucy's front right leg was amputated 12/19/11. Thankfully there was no tumor, but her nerves were found to be degenerative.  Life as a tripawd is Lucy's new adventure!!

HOWEVER I am thankful that it isnt worse and she doesn't need extras at this time. I also am thankful that you keep posting about her condition in order to be a been there voice for others. I know I always do forum searches when I am looking for answers!

do nothing...sounds like a nice alternative.  sometimes i get swelling in my left arm - due to them taking out lymph nodes with the bc surgery...and i have a compression sleeve i can wear to lessen the effects of the diminished lymph system function..  maybe they make 'doggie compression garments' if the swelling gets too bad???   or maybe just some 'puppy spanx'....

I'm laughing, but this is probably worth investigating. It might help.

Oh, that sounds like very good news that the fluid is not in her chest cavity or abdomen.

Puppy spanx... too funny.

Rio - listen to me - if your mama comes after you with anything like that, you run! They are no fun to wear! Just let your tummy hang out and be proud of it, grrrrlfriend!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Wheeeew! I like the do-nothing approach myself.

Rio, we saw two different "Woo" signs today, which we neglected to take pics of. One was "Woo's Market" and the other one was "WooooHooooo"!

Seriously. We thought these were VERY good signs that everything is going to be just fine. The Woo magic has made it to Southern California.
