Hi, my 75lb, approx 8ish year old, German shepherd mix has hind leg amputation surgery scheduled two days from now. She has a history of seizures and is on Keppra for that as well as Rimadyl and Gabapentin for pin related to her pathological femur fx from recently diagnosed bone cancer
I’m supposed to take her in tomorrow morning to get a fentanyl patch prior to her surgery the next day. Any safety concerns with fentanyl and her other medications and conditions. The only thing I know of fentanyl is from the news that it is highly dangerous and kills a lot of people as a street drug
There is no increased of seizures that I know of for Fentanyl or other narcotics. Because of the risk to humans if ingested more practices are avoiding Fentanyl patches in favor of narcotic drips during surgery but I used to use those patches all of the time quite successfully.

Brownie had a Fentanyl Patch before surgery and after surgery. The vet wrote a prescription which I would have to go fill. Then take Brownie and the patch to his vet to place the patch on him. I was not allowed to touch the patch. Brownie did not have any issues but he did feel pretty relaxed. Lol
I did go online and search for a coupon. In 2019 it was a little over a 100.00 for two patches which only last a week. The coupon knocked it down to like 35.00.
My Beautiful Beloved Brownie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on February 26, 2019. With all odds against him he lived an additional one year and eight days with amputation, love, and prayer. I was honored to be his mom, and I have never been so proud! He will live forever in my Heart!
