I'm a HUGE believer in essential oils for myself and my kids...but I'm wondering if they have the same effect on dogs as they do people.

The reason I ask is that JJ, my new tripawd Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix, is ready to GO! And by go I mean wants to chase after cats, jump over the baby gate that keeps him out of the reach of our kids, etc. Things that can he can hurt himself doing just 1 week post amp.

I use lavender essential oils on a daily basis on my children and I. It has a noticeable calming effect.  I use Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Oils so it isn't something that's lavender "fragranced." It's actual lavender.  I'm wondering if I can put a drop behind his ear and it will relax him? Or would the scent be too much for a dogs' sensitive nose?

I know it's a weird question...but I want to keep him quiet and make him as comfortable as possible!

I'm not a vet but I'll throw this out there for you. We published it in our Downloads blog a while back. This vet is really neat and I believe she has a new book out.

I don't know too much about this but I do know that lavender oil seems to be safe for dogs.  There is also a product called Rescue Remedy that can help naturally calm dogs.

Our 6 1/2 year old female lab is crazy.  We call her our ADD child! She has separation anxiety, can't be left alone, can't be crated and gets upset going places.  She also has fear aggression.  She'll do laps in the car around Hunter, her lab brother.  She's also our monkeybutt.

We have tried a lot of "fixes"... like Rescue Remedy, the Comfort Zone plug in, and holistic meds.

We've tried a Thundershirt as well, but that only helps a little bit.

We have also tried essential oils with her (Young Living brand). Peace and Calming is nice.

And we recently came upon one called Trauma Life.  That one has calmed her down the most.  I apply it to her neck up to the base of her ears so she can smell it.  The first time she smelled it she went from jumping on my husband and wanting to be in his lap to immediately laying down on the floor!

I hear that combining Trauma Life with Peace and Calming intensifies the effect.

*This is what Young Living has to say about it:

Trauma Life™ is a calming, grounding blend of therapeutic-grade essential oils formulated to help release buried emotional trauma resulting from accidents, neglect, the death of a loved one, assault, or abuse. Left unchecked, emotionally draining episodes may be at the root of fatigue, anger, and restlessness.

I now use it when I have to take her to a vet appt. for Hunter and she's so much easier to deal with.  She also wears a harness which makes it easier to control her body when she's pacing or jumping up on me.

Hope this helps,

Hunter's Mom

Our Super Dog Hunter crossed over the Rainbow Bridge on a beautiful summer day in July, just 3 days shy of his 10th Birthday. He gave us everything since he was 8 weeks old.  Hunter was a 14 month warrior of OS.  We LOVE and MISS him every day.

I was going to suggest Rescue Remedy but I like Hunter's mom's suggestion and may try that for my high anxiety lab/border collie Lucy! She uses RR and she recently started with the Thundershirt during storms. I started RR after her amputation because I was nervous about her high anxiety and thought she might hurt herself during recovery. It helped but I think the pain meds had a larger effect on her during that time. Good luck!

Lucy's front right leg was amputated 12/19/11. Thankfully there was no tumor, but her nerves were found to be degenerative.  Life as a tripawd is Lucy's new adventure!!

Hey thanks Hunter's Mom! That is great to hear about Trauma Life. What kind of dosage does your pup get?

We wrote about Rescue Remedy once in our Nutrition blog. We thought it would work on crazy Wyatt Ray, but he actually ate an entire bottle once and it didn't do anything for him! Yes, we have an ADD child too. Looks like Trauma Life is next.
