So Bosco is about 2 months post amputation and is third round of chemo is set for this Monday.  He has been doing pretty well with it but has occasionally had a little nausea and decreased appetite.  However, the last few days his energy is good and he is eating well but barely drinking at all.  My husband was home with him yesterday and did not see him drink once.  He did take a small sip before bed for me.  I have tried putting his water in various bowls and with beef stock and he wount drink.  He will lick a little off my fingers, like hand feeding him.  He has not drank today and moved away from me when I brought water to him after eating.  He will at least eat a frosty paw so there is a little water in that.

Any suggestions about what to do?  Do I need to take him to the emergency vet?  Bosco means the world to me and I'm feeling so anxious.  He does have an appointment set for this Monday.  I just don't know what to do and hope I'm over reacting.

While waiting for our "volunteer vet"  to respond, just a couple of suggestions.

Do you have a ceramic bowl to put the water in?  The chemo may mess with his taste buds and water may not taste good out of a metal or stainless steel bowl..maybe.....just throwing that out there.

Someone replied to a post about their dog nit drinking:  LEAVE THE TOILET SEAT UP!! 🙂 🙂   Nothing tastes better to dogs than toilet bowl water! 🙂

Something else...when my Happy Hannah didn't drink after her amp surgery, mixed ice cream in the water.  I would first let her start licking on the scoop...And then let her follow the scoop into the water vowl and I swirled it around a bit.  Try that.

Also, try some flavored ice cubes with a little peanut butter...or just plain ice cubes.

I know it's not a "fool proof" test, but pull the skin up at the backmof his neck and see if it snspes back fairly quickly.

Hang in there!  Bosco is doing well overall and that's good!!

Hugs

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Yes I have tried ceramic and glass bowls.  I even put water in a bowl he ate out of and he wouldn't touch it.  Also tried swirling different things he likes to eat in his water bowl and nope, he wount touch it either.  He has never liked ice or drinking from the toilet.  Thank god water is the first ingredient in frosty paws because he is at least getting a little water.  Not my first choice but it's something.

In general if a dog is eating they are probably taking in enough water even if you don't see them drinking much.  If they don't eat OR drink then you might worry.  You could always give him ice cubes or add water to his food.
