Ok, I'm a little worried right now. Chance had his 4th round if IV chemo on Friday. He has sailed through the other ones with flying colors. This time I noticed some dark urine(he dribbled on the floor) Friday night and figured I would just watch it. Yesterday was fine and today he did the same thing. He came in after urinating, dribbled on the floor and it was bright red blood! Naturally I freaked out and called Auburn. They said to get another urinalysis but my vet is closed today and I'm 2 hours away from Auburn. I hope and feel like it is a UTI but can't be certain. I know this is a side effect with some oral chemo but has anyone ever seen this in IV?

Chance is a 10ish Shetland Sheepdog Mix who was rescued from the shelter in January of 2013 and diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in September of 2013. He had a front left amputation and 6 rounds of carboplatin. He had a great 11 months and was diagnosed with lung mets on 8/23/14. He was released to the bridge on 8/28/14.

Sounds definitely like a UTI (of course I am no vet). We never had that problem with the IV chemo now with the metronomics we did the Cytoxin.  I would try to get him as soon as you can the longer you wait the worse it can get :(   Awww Chance I am so sorry that you are going through this.  Hugs to get better soon

Hugs

Oh I can imagine how scary it is, but hang in there, it's probably cystitis which is fairly easily controlled with meds. Do a search here for "cystitis" and you'll find lots of info ((sorry on my mobile now or I would). We hope it's an easy remedy, let us know and give him extra smooches from us!

Sterile hemorrhagic cystitis is mainly seen with Cytoxan (cyclophosphamide).  Any chemo drug can cause immunosuppression and therefore make a pre-existing bladder infection worse.  Bladder stones and prostate disease are also possible causes of blood in the urine. A rare condition called hemolytic anemia can cause bloody urine and is responsive to steroids.

I would get a urinalysis done as well as bladder xrays.

Thank you for all the comments. I got a free catch today and took it to my husbands office (he's a doctor) and ran a urinalysis there. It showed 75 WBC, 250 RBC, 30 protein and a trace of bili. The vets at auburn didn't want to start any antibiotics yet until they know a type of organism that is growing by looking under a microscope. If that's not it then they would expect some type of stones. My family vet, however, thinks its ok to start him on augmentin. Should I still take him to my vet in the am and let them run some test or just start the antibiotics and see if that helps?

Hi Taylor,

I'm sorry to hear about this - obviously I'm not a vet, but Jill did have a suspected UTI (we're still not sure if it was an actual UTI...long story) while she was on IV chemo (she was doing carbo/doxorubicin) and her oncologist did say that since chemo can suppress the immune system, a UTI can definitely be caused.  I would take him in to have a culture run, that way they can know for sure what type of bacteria it is if it is a UTI.

Hope he feels better soon!

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Oh you're so lucky to have a doctor in the family!

If it was me I would wait, just to avoid any unnecessary switch of medications if necessary. Keep us posted!

Everything is looking better. I took him by my vet's yesterday and since we had already started the antibiotics he said a culture wouldn't show anything. We will finish those and check his urine again. He has come around as far as the chemo goes. It just took him a day longer to get over this round. Thanks for everyone's help. Just another small bump in the road to keep me on my toes!
