Max is presenting with almost the exact same symptoms as his first crutiate episode….except in his remaining rear leg. Its given out slightly a couple of time, but he gets right back up and wants to play. He also has not wanted to go up and down steps or get into the car. While I know what the ultimate outcome of this is, I just cant put him down when he is still so full of life and wants to play and seems happy. He has slowed a bit and his eating has begun to decrease in the last 2 days. I dont know if its from the cancer or the painful leg.

Bottom line is, what meds can I give him to alleviate the pain from the leg? Can I give Tramadol and Rimadyl at the same time to see if that works? We have also weaned him off of the prednisone that he was on per his oncologists instructions…could that be part of the not eating and slowness? I guess the thrombocytopenia could be coming back as well.

I will call Max's ortho and oncologist tomorrow for their weigh in, but id love to have some info before then…..this is just killing me. I never thought Id be considering euthanasia for pain generated by his remaining leg. Its almost more than I can take.

Any info is appreciated. thanks

You can give Tramadol with Rimadyl but do not give Rimadyl with Pred (can cause GI ulcers).  A Lab can have 2-3 tabs of Tramadol 2 to 3 times daily as needed for pain control.  Main side effects are sleepiness.

Many dogs with ACL rupture do not have pain so much as instability, so the main treatment is surgery.  I know that this is probably not an option for Max right now due to the lung mets and unfortunately knee braces do not work well in dogs due to their anatomy.

I would see how the pain meds work and try to keep him rested and quiet until you can get in to see your vet.

Thanks, Pam! What would we do without you?? I finally ended up pulling out Max's instructions from his TPLO and we were giving him that combination of Rimadyl and Tramadol during his recovery. So much has happened since then that I had forgotten.

Ive called his Ortho and Onco today and we are having a CBC done, so Im hoping for the best. Thanks again for your very valuable knowledge and information
