I feel so teary tonight-Lily has had an upset stomach all week. I took her off the K9 Immunity , Apocaps , arteminisin, etc. Vet put her on Flagyl and rice/ground beef mixture. She's a little better-I worry about her being off everything, but don't know what is upsetting her.

We're off to the vet tomorrow for her chest x-rays and bloodwork. I just hate the worrying and waiting for the results of the x-ray. She's almost at 7 months post amp, and I am so very grateful for the last seven months, and just praying that we will have more time without mets. I do know from being here that many of our dogs have had lots of good time after the mets appear-but I am still just dreading this visit. Not in a good frame of mind right now. Sorry for being nutty! We went for a walk last night, and we definitely went about twice as far as usual. She wanted to run almost the whole way (she's a greyhound and loves her runs). The last part of the walk was hard for her and she was so winded when we got home. I think that's one of the reasons I'm so scared that something is going on. I know that it's summer, greyhounds are not very heat tolerant, and she is a front leg amp---please let that be the reason, nothing else.

Thanks so much for being here...

Our beautiful Lily was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her front leg on 12/14/11 at age 8 and had amp on 12/16/11. She completed 5 rounds of carbo. She was so brave and kicked cancer's butt daily! She lived life fully for 4 years, 3 months, and 15 days after her amp. My angel is a warrior princess. I miss her so much.

Try not to panic.  You said the walk was twice as long.  It is hot.  She is a front amp. It's probably not surprising that she was exhausted at the end.

Not sure what would be upsetting her tummy but there are lots of reasons other than cancer. Although I know how much we jump to that conclusion!

Praying for you that the vet visit goes well.  Hang in there.

Sending pawsitive thoughts that it is nothing serious and can be easily fixed. Wishing you lots more time together!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. I hear ya about being worried about being off everything! That is such a helpless place! (But no matter how much I beg, we are on hold until Duke's wound heals.) I'm envious of you getting 5 rounds of carbo! Remember, of greyhounds on your protocol 30% are making it to the 2 year mark! 10% to 3 years! Hopefully you and Lily will be in the 3-year group!

With re to the x-rays - I hadn't realized we were just over 3 months since initial diagnosis and chest x-rays last week. (We go to vet Mon and Thurs to have leg dressing changed.) Anyway, we realized last Monday that we were due for chest x-rays (my onco likes to do them every 3 months) and the onco asked if I wanted to go ahead and do the x-rays that day. With tears in my eyes (and they just popped in again, darn them!) I said no, I needed to be better prepared - that I couldn't handle any bad news that day. So, I fretted until last Thurs and had them done then. Luckily they were clear. So, I get the teary! Wish I could be more like my brave Duke and just enjoy today with no regard for tomorrow. Stupid human brain with the ability to worry about the future! winker

Overall, it sounds like Lily is doing really welll with her long walks! I'm hoping the being tired is what you suspect - heat, upset tum, etc. The Metronidazole (Flagyll) should help with diarrhea - but I tell ya what, that stuff makes me throw up instantly. How on earth it settles their stomachs and stops diarrhea I will never understand.

Hopefully you can figure out the cause of the upset tummy. (Duke just started the K9 Immunity today so I'll watch for any tummy issues with him.) I know with the all the meds Duke has been on he has also been on Pepcid and Prilosec to help with potential tummy issues. Just something to think about or ask your vet about.

Good thoughts coming your way from Duke and I. Let us know how it goes.

Well, if you're nutty, we are too! Welcome to the loony bin! laughing

It's easy to be overly-paranoid when cancer comes into your life. When one little health challenge happens, something that in the past we might have dismissed for a few days, we tend to get very stressed out over. You're normal, it's OK. Try to hang in there as best you can until you know for sure what you're dealing with. A lot of times, an introduction of too many supplements at once will throw even the strongest cast-iron stomach into a tailspin.

We had a similar situation when I was eight months past surgery. I was panting like crazy for a few days, and my parents didn't know why. They were worried sick and called my vet, who reminded them that it was over 100 degrees where we were, so no kidding I was panting! That's all it was, the heat. I hope it's the same for you and Lily too.

Well, you responded to my 'worried' post yesterday, so you have to know that you are not the only one who panics!

We are on our third round of pancreatitis in the last year and I can tell you that every single time Zeus gets weak and pants very, very easily.  So, it may be the upset stomach that is causing the panting...

Good luck at the vet and please keep us posted.  Hugs and barrel-loads of good thoughts to you!!

Lisa and Zeus

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

You are so wonderful, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all your replies--such wisdom! Lily's x-ray was clear and she will be celebrating her 7 month ampuversary on Mondayclap I could finally take a breath after that long wait when she disappears down the hall for the x-ray until I see the vet's face. We will get blood, urine, and stool report tomorrow. The vet is not sure why the upset stomach-probably one of the supplements. We are going to slowly add them back in to see which one is affecting her.

Every day I tell her that we are kicking cancer's butt--she is such a brave girl-- as are all of our babies. Thank you all for being there-I told my vet that this place is wonderful, and it's just about the only place I go online to find out about what to do. I was driving myself crazy looking all over the internet when Lily was first diagnosed. So exhausting...

Keeping all of your fur babies in my thoughts and sending everyone strength to deal with this damn disease!

We just received a call from the vet with the rest of the test results-blood, stool, and urine. He said everything was normal!! As I mentioned in my post above, I think that we will start slowly adding supplements back one at a time. So this was the best birthday present I could have gotten-clean x-ray and test results. Maybe I can put the paranoia away at least for a few days or the next worry. In the meantime, I am going to enjoy every second with my baby. Thanks again for always being there.

Yay! Duke is happy his greyt pal got the all clear! Must have been the heat, or one of the supplements, or a combo, or...

I started Duke on K9 Immunity the day before yesterday. Last night he was panting badly and couldn't settle down - I thought he was nauseous. (That's how he was about 6 hours after his first chemo which is when the nausea often strikes I've read.) Anyway, I gave him a Benadryl last night (which knocks him out quickly) and he woke up this morning feeling fine. I'm keeping my eye on it however. I know Duke has a very tender tummy, which I think is a greythound thing. They are such awesome creatures, and yet such fragile dogs.... also known as money pits. 🙂 At the specialty clinic where I go there are always at least as many greyhounds as other dogs put together. Lots of us there because of cancer and the rest mostly due to leg injuries from racing. Admittedly three of the local rescue groups take their injured dogs there, but man... the greyhounds could practically keep the place in business just by themselves. Enjoy your beautiful girl!

Woo hoo Lily!!!  Oh the joys of dogs with sensitive stomachs...Lupe was prone to colitis and pancreatitis, to the point where the vet would basically trust my description of symptoms and have the flagyl ready to go and I kept rice and ground beef or chicken ready to cook just in case.

Keep kicking that ugly "Big C's" butt Lily!  You can do it!!!
