Guys - I'm freaking!  I need your fingers crossed for me.  Last night, I was petting Jack, Jill's (not by blood) brother and I swear I felt a small little lump near his upper leg/next to his spine.  Maybe I am now overly sensitive to all of this, but it's definitely there and he hissed at me when I pushed on it (and he is not an aggressive cat.  I made an appointment ASAP, but the first the vet had wasn't until Sunday.  Ugh this cannot be happening!!!  I am hoping maybe he just bruised himself from constantly laying like this on the hardwood floors :(

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Awww what a cutie!

Ok, you aren't going to believe this, but lots of us here become instantaneously freaked out about any lump or bump after dealing with cancer. It's like all of a sudden we become super hypervigillant and call our vets to aspirate anything suspicious. And that, is great! And it's especially great because almost every time the lump or bump turns out to be nothing to worry about at all.

It doesn't hurt to have the vet look at it, and you're super great for making an appointment, but try not to worry. I'm going to bet you a lifetime supply of catnip that the bump is nothing serious. Yep, I'm that confident!

When reading your post. I had to laugh.  You are so like me.  I am constantly picking at Cadence to see if I can find anything suspicious on her.  Cadence has a history of mass cell tumors, so that is the reasoning behind that.  One day had her rolled on her back and I found a suspicious looking bump on her.  It was towards the bottom of her stomach area.  Of course I freaked out.  I called the vet and made the appointment for the next day.  When we get there, Cadence rolls on her stomach, happy as can be, and I show the vet where the bump was.  The vet feels around for a second and then looks at me with this look on her face.  Im thinking oh @@@@.  With a straight face, she says to me,  " That my dear, is a nipple."  I wanted to crawl into the corner and just hide.  I laugh about it now, but I was horrified then.  Thankfully my vet has a sense of humor.

Im sure, like Jerry said, its just nothing.  It's good that you are going to the vet, it will help put your mind at ease.  I hope Jill is doing well and her recovery is going smoothly.  I hope the story made you laugh.  laughing

Maybe its a mast cell thing...
I can't tell you how many times I flipped Maggie on her back to check a suspicious lump, only to find it was one of her nipples! I'm lucky I guess... I figured it out at home! I will say that of all the foreign lumps I found on Mag were mast cell tumors, I think she topped out at 7 or 8, so it is important to have each one checked out.
I don't think any of us ever look at lumps the same again after a cancer diagnosis- get it checked, but try not to panic until you know what it is for sure.

My husband has become obsessive examining Duke and Emmi.  If anything is the slightest bit 'off' he knows it.  I think we have to be diligent in observing things that aren't normal, but you can drive yourself (and your spouse in my case) crazy if you are constantly on the search for the abnormal.

I'm a much more casual watcher.  If something doesn't seem quite right, I'll watch it for a day or two to see if it changes, then decide if it needs a vet to check it out.

Oh, wow!  Two diagnoses in 60 days.  You have all my good thoughts coming your way.  So glad to hear they got clear margins on the lab.

I hope you didn't take my first post out of context.  Once you have been down that cancer road, your life and how you watch your dogs (or cats) will never be the same. You never stop watching at some level.

Michelle it's a good thing I read your post before today or I'd be so embarrassed. Just got home from the vet with Jack. I pointed out the "lump" to the vet and she looked at me and says "well that's his spine."

oops. He does however have a newly discovered heart murmur so maybe it was meant to be that I bring him in!
