Once again another question about Sarge not Kayla!!! 🙂

Sarge has always had numerous skin growths (look like warts or skin tags) on his belly - the vet has never been concerned about then. Now he has atleast 20 on his belly and under his legs varying in size. They seem to be popping up everywhere lately and I have noticed one starting on his chin (first time one has appeared not on the belly). does anyone else have a older dog with this? Is it normal/common? we have also found a lump under his front leg this one however is hard and under this skin - doesn't appear to be causing any issues (no pain, not changing etc) about a inch accross. After a lifetime of vet trips and surgery we have made the decision that there will be no more drastic stuff for Sarge there is only so much we can put him through. Im not worryed (much) about all his extra bits 🙂 but just wondering if anyone else out there has this.

Sorry about asking yet more questions about a non tripawd - I swear Kayla is the easy one in our family.

We should all be so lucky to have "old age" problems with our dogs. Sam (14 yrs) has lots of skin tags and as many lipomas as black spotslaughing

He has also just been diagnosed with doggy dementia. He sleeps like a log all day and between 11pm-2am he gets up and starts pacing and panting....walking around and around the kitchen table...and then he stops and stares at the wall...in the dark.sad.......we started giving him Benedyl just before we go to bed and it seems to help keep him down all night. If it didnt work I was going to start taking it!

They just don't "get us" Samson!  We have brilliant minds and what may seem like quirks is just our brilliance at work!  Sheesh.

Sarah,
If you don't plan on doing anything drastic anymore does it matter what the bumps are? I know it is hard not to find out what they are. Quad pug Tani who is almost 12 has recurring mast cell tumors, we are up to eight now. I am not going to take anymore off unless they become a problem (like ulcerating). My vet wants to keep aspirating the lumps as I find them so we can put them on the chart. But since I am not planning on taking them off I'm not sure why I would do that. I did have her (the vet) look at a bump I found on Tani's chest last time we were there. She thought it was a skin tag that was too small to aspirate but offered to take it off. I decided to leave it. There is a bit of a risk not taking the tumors off, but I don't think Tani needs anymore surgeries. Besides, once there are multiple tumors (in our case) they tend to keep coming.
I have a couple of friends with dogs older than Tani, and they are pretty lumpy at this point, a combination of fatty tumors and skin tags. I don't think is unusual for older dogs to develop them. But if you are going to worry a lot about the lumps maybe you should have your vet check- for your own peace of mind.

Thanks Karen,  Im not really worried about them and already know they aren't harmfull, just wondering about them really never had a dog with them before.

And your right Samson I should be grateful that we have old age issues, old age can be cruel sometimes though. Hope the Benedyl keeps working for Sam (or you 🙂

Guess I shouldn't be taking up space about non tripawd dogs.  Sorry 🙂

My Maggie has MANY lumps on her as well.  There is one I'm a tad worried about but at 12 years old, I'm not going to remove it unless it becomes a real issue and opens up or something.  I told her no more surgeries after the amputation, so I have to stick to that.  And the fact, she has soooo many lumps and bumps, really where does one start?

I've been told that it's an old dog thing..

Rio also started getting lumpy as she got older.  Like Tani, some of her's were mast cell, but others were lipomas and even melanomas.  (Before that word freaks you out, you should know that most canine melanomas are benign.)  I didn't bother to even have it tested to see if it was though, because I had no thought of doing anything about it one way or another.  The melanomas are usually a different color than normal skin pigment -- Rio's was like a big black mole on the underside of her tail base.  If Sarge's skin tags are normal colored, then they could just be a sign of "getting old."

I say....if you can......DON'T WORRY.  I can't because I'm insane.  But if you can...then put it out of your head.

My neighbor has a dog that has tons of skin tag type bumps and he is elderly too.

If 4-legged Monkeybutt Bunny Vampire Pirate can make 700+ posts and 4-legged Samson 007 can have 300+ posts, then Sarge is welcome to a few of his own!  We have to clamp down on those two since they'd take over the site if we let them!laughing

Valentina had lots of those skin tags too. Some on her stomach, the backs of her upper thighs and some on her feet and lower legs. She kept getting more the older she got. She also had 2 lipomas. One was the size of a golf ball on her side near her ribs and the other was a few inches away from that one and a little smaller. She had testing done on one of them and it was benign. She had one growth on the underside of her foot once that started out looking like a skin tag or wart but then it grew and grew and started bleeding and getting caught on things. She had to have it removed and it was tested and it was benign too. I don't remember what that was called though. Weird stuff happens when they get older huh?
