Continued...from pg 4

When the furnace people came out, they found soot on the outtake pipe of the house. He tested for carbon monoxide and found crazy numbers, unsafe numbers over 2000 parts per million. It should be under 100 parts per million at the exhaust. Low levels in the house still dangerous. We have three detectors in the house, one on each floor, not one went off because the levels were too low on those particular detectors. But high enough to cause symptoms to cause harm!!?!?!

He had us open the house all up and get fresh air flowing thru.

He said our heat exchanger would need to be replaced. They could not tell the exact cause w/o getting into to replace it.

Today they did and found a massive crack in the heat exchanger leaking carbon monoxide into the house and thru the outtake pipe outside the house.

I had to wait to post all this info to get confirmation from the vets before posting it.

When they came in to look at the furnace, I had Purkins upstairs recovering. I hear all this upstairs, and my first THOUGHT WAS PURRKINS. DID THIS CAUSE ALL THIS??!!?! I Start hollering from upstairs. I tell him what Purrkins has just gone thru and ask if this caused this?!?!

He advised us to let our vets know !!!!! Of course, I was right on this emailed Dr. R (kitty vet) emailed & called dr matt, emailed dogwood neurology.

Saturday, I heard back from Dogwood, not Purrkins vet, another neurologist on Saturday. He looked over my email and info and had the front desk call me.

Saying YES this can predispose Purrkins to seizures!

I heard from Purrkins Neurologist today. Dr. Isaacs confirms what his colleague said and set up a plan with Dr. R to get Purrkins off the pheno in 6 months if Purkins remains seizure-free.

Purrkins hangs out by ALL the registers. The first time I noticed a mild whisker twitch was in Oct. when we would have started the furnace. NORMALLY w/o covid we have someone come out and do a tune-up on the furnace before each season.

Saxton has not shown any symptoms! (looking back now, i can put pieces of this puzzle together. Saxton changed where he sleeps; he must have sensed something/felt something and started lying on the sofa. It spared SMART SEXY SAXTON from harm that we can tell! (Both the boy's bloodwork have been done, and there were no indicators .)

I have videos of Purrkins seizures in front of the heat registers. Of course, I notice this now !! Saxton used to hang out by the registers but has not for some time.

Purrkins having to spend the night at Dogwood and be away was the greatest gift. Being sedated and on oxygen and fluids, yet another lifesaver, and yes, we have angels watching over us, and they all came to rescue, Mr. P. i have no words, you guys.

We have also experienced symptoms of nausea, headaches, tired, my brain not firing like normal. HAZEY! ALL of which we attributed to all the stress we have been going thru.

So apparently, carbon monoxide detectors have a massive difference in how many parts per million can be picked up. Mark can likely explain this better than i can and have him look if you have tech questions.

WE now have a new heat exchanger they replaced all the burners plus gas orifices & exhaust. The heat exchanger was under warranty; the furnace is not even 10 years old.

And this new carbon monoxide detector. Which one has to buy thru a licensed HVAC company.

Low-Level Carbon Monoxide Monitor National Safety Institute Model 3000

This monitor was $250, no not cheap, and worth all of our lives!!!!

What are the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning in cats?

&
Protecting Your Pets and Your Family from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Ok, my friends, that's all i got for today. It's been ----! & could have been much worse! It rips our hearts to pieces that Purrkins is a victim.

Please get your furnaces checked out and check out what parts per million your carbon monoxide detectors pick up please.

We can only HOPE Purrkins will save more lives. He is the talk of neurology, Dr. Matt, and the cat clinic, who will all be on the lookout for this. Our neurologist is getting the same detector put in his home. He asked me to send him the make model etc.

I hope this is not a big jumble & makes some sense. Holler if you have questions. Likely we have the answers ..🥺🥺

Love to you all!

Holly, I just don't even know where to begin there is so much incredible, important and PAWESOME information in this update!

First, OMC I'm so glad you guys are all ALIVE! Geeeeeeez! This just blew me away, it makes so much sense that the faulty furnace was causing so many issues for you guys. What a blessing in disguise, it's amazing that nobody was seriously injured or killed. Thank you for reminding us of the importance of a high quality co2 detector, especially sharing that model. I know who's home is getting that model ...

I also love the description that you shared about the Cat Friendly Practice difference. Another shocking discovery here, I had no idea that it made a difference for cats at home as well as inside the practice. It makes so much sense though! Their noses are incredible and a cat must smell terrible coming home from a clinic with all that disinfectant and intermingling of other animals' fearful scents and such. No wonder the boys would fight. I hope you don't mind but I want to turn that into a blog post, more Trikitty members need to know! And it will be VERY interesting to see how Saxton reacts to the new practice.

Well, thank you so much for sharing all of this. You may have saved some Tripawds members' lives too with your furnace info. I am so, so glad you are all OK. I'll bet you will sleep well tonight!

Makes total sense.  We are all electric here so no carbon monoxide.  We're on a slab,  no basement..(i wish) The ground here is too hard,  full of  lime and stones so most ppl don't have a basement. Most homes here are electric.

All in all you guys WON!! Purrkins is going to be ok, Sexy Saxton is a wise old soul,  and my friend and her partner in crime are recovering...VICTORY!!

You all need rest and recovery time.  Please take that time.  We're aren't going anywhere ❤

Thank you for sharing that invaluable knowledge. I grew up with gas and oil heat.

I'm still breathing relief for all of you.  Thank God you're all ok❤❤❤

HOLY BLEEPING BLEEP!!!
That is some crazy sh*t Holly!
So glad you guys are ok.
And glad I have electric hvac.
But my parents have a fireplace, and my sisters. One of your screenshots says to open a window when using a fireplace... who the hell does that?? I'm going to check if they even have a CO detector.
Good news is that ya'll are ok, and that the info you shared could save people's health/lives.

Also, I agree with Rene that the cat friendly practice info is great. Next time the cat e-book is updated, that should be added.

And NO on the mouse aquarium, but YES on the flippity fish!

And sorry to hear about your aunt and uncles.

I know who's home is getting that model ...

The furnace guy said most everyone balks at the price of this unit, which ends the conversation. Mark told them to please use us, Mr. P, as an example! You cant un poison; we are fortunate to have the lower levels in the house & be ALIVE. I DO NOT TRUST our 3 other detectors; what would it have taken for ours to have gone off?!! I will add we do test those 2 times a year, and according to the test, they are working.. (testing means hit the button and make sure the alarm goes off! I asked the furnace guy how can they sell this CRAP in the stores. I can't remember his exact response right now. Mark likely will, but it came down to lawsuits, of course.

For ours to have gone off, would we have been with it enough to get out of the house? ?!!? No idea.🤬🤯☠️

Not to mention covid - we are all in our homes more!

It's my head exploding at everything you guys have been through!!! I cannot even imagine where your emotions are right now! You've always been a wealth of information on so many levels, but who would have ever thought it would reach the level of saving lives, human and kitty! We are all just so glad everyone is okay. And the fact that Purrkins in a bellwether for the problems with the leak..... Miracle kitties indeed..     And Saxton is back sleeping on the register?  . He knows it is safe now. Unbelievable!   He's the best carbon  monoxide  tester you have😎

And like Jackie, I have a small tavlet screen.  I did even realize my "head exploding guy" had a lightbulb for a head...this your lightbulb comment🤣😂

The idea of losing you guys to something like that is just so hard to wrap my head around.  Especially with three CO detectors..... really ?!!

Victory... yes.  After a long hard fight.  Challenged to the max and you all made it out ok. So scary.

I missed the photo regarding woodstove because I have a hard time expanding photos on my cell.  We have a fireplace.  I have cracked the window but it kind of defeats the purpose when it's 15 degrees out? ! I will have to look and make sure we're not missing anything.

It's been such a long week.  Im glad you're all cozy now and safe.  I can't believe the whole heat register thing and Saxton. That is just crazy....  they are so much smarter than we realize.

Sending hugs ❤

Pawesome, thanks Holly, it's a future blog post.

As for cracking a window, we do that here in the RV when we run the furnace because so many campers die of carbon monoxide poisoning I'm super paranoid. But geez I never would have thought of cracking a window or door in a stick home. My parent's home is air tight during winter, I'm going to warn mom when I talk to her this weekend! Thank you Holly, you and Mark and the boys have saved lives with this info. I'm just so glad yours was saved too!

HOLY Bleep and more Bleep.... I am so glad you found this.  Thank God nothing happened to all of you.  Bad enough Purrkins.  So glad you are all ok.  I looked up a place to buy that Carbon Monoxide detector.  Only 1 company in 50 miles of me.  Not even Omaha sells it.  I am going to have to see if I can call and order a couple of them for here.

Not sure if you can order online or just through the HVAC people but only 1 company sells that particular model around here.  geesh.

THANK YOU. IT MEANS THE WORLD TO US!😘💝

We do crack the sliding door in the winter for the boys;) They ask- it is only for seconds. They say burr and say ok, no thanks.

This is our hope!!! Who knew there was a difference on co monitors!?!!? Had we known, this would have never happened. We can't change what we don't know.

With covid, we chose not to have our check-up this year, and we have to live with that.,🥺 here we were trying to protect all of us, and this happens.

We are blessed and beyond grateful Purrkins will be ok. Does this make all this easier NO WAY.

We are grateful that we are all alive; as i said before, this could have been much worse on all counts. It is unbelievable as it is.

Thanks, everyone, we appreciate it.!

Loads of love from a safe, warm Purrkins Palace.

As of 9:00 am this morning, Purrkins has adapted to his pheno. WHOO HOOsmiley_clap

Dr. R's kitty vet says we can do a dental in 6. months and what we were hoping to hear this has been too much for Purrkins.

I told Dr. R the closer we get to our six months and booking a dental appt, we NEED to have A DISCUSSION on sedation. I have records going back on what anesthesia Purrkins did do well on. The protocol used or the MRI can not be repeated.

Dr. Matts planned to get Purrkins off the meds very slowly in four months. Dr. R and Dr. I said six months. We see Dr. Matt next and will make a compromise we can all get on board with.

Both plans will be to taper slowly, then we watch and let Purrkins be our guide. We likely will be able to get off the meds, but there is the chance we may not. We have to be realistic and keep hoping and praying!

It is safer for Purrkins brain to stay on the pheno and be seizure-free. Seizures do cause damage to the brain.

Again knock on wood Purrkins has been seizure-free since starting the 15 mg 2 x a day. As much as we cant wait to get him off the meds, we will be patient, which is much easier to do as we see Purrkins finally adjusting to the meds.

Purrkins will furever be very sensitive to carbon monoxide, and we should be safe with the new monitor, but honestly, i don't trust much these daze!

Yes, it makes us feel safer knowing lower levels will be detected, but no level is safe. The fact that these lower levels poison us is unacceptable! THREE detectors did not alarm us.

WELL, GRRR & then some🤬🤬🤬!! Words and the venom i have within. I have to eject because we cannot change a damn thing. We know better; we do better. We live and learn, like it or not!

As i wrote this morning in an email, covid is trying to kill us in so many ways.

We are so grateful to be alive and see the light here and pray our experience saves others from the same fate.

(my Yogi tea bag - stress-relief:) YES

Thanks again, everyone, for the love and support, holding us up, keeping Purrkins in your prayers, etc.

We are literally breathing easier here at Purrkins Palace.

I am catching up on Purrkins blog- you will see many repeats from this craziness.

Feel free to ignore us as we get the blog current.

loads of love & appreciation
