Since losing Zeus, Greg and I have been volunteering at our local shelter several times a week.  Our shelter rates dogs with Level 3 and 4 being dogs that can be walked by experienced handlers due to issues such as heavy pulling/dog aggression, etc.  One of the Level 4 dogs is Jenny - a Boxer/Ridgeback mix that has 'issues'.  She is incredibly smart and a one-on-one love bug, but she becomes extremely protective of her owner/handler and has a hard time feeling comfortable with multiple people in her presence.  For some reason she accepts me and Greg together and will even let both of us sit on a couch with her in between us.  Therefore, we decided to give her a home for the holiday.  Here is her link if you care for a peek:

Wish us luck.  Although we are not ready to expand our little family permanently, we are VERY excited about having a furry baby around at least for a little while.  Still miss my Little Gentleman, but I hope he's proud.

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

She's very pretty. That's great that you are giving her a chance. I bet that will do her good. :)

She is very pretty and giving her a home if only for a little while.  We had a Ridgeback when I was growing up and part of what you are describing about her being protective and one person oriented is in their personality. I didn't know enough about dog behavior as a kid to relay much useful information, but I'm sure with work and love she will be fine. Ours was extremely family protective and would bite if she thought someone was threatening her people.

Do some research on the breed and the best training techniques for them.  They are very intelligent. We think our Emmi may have some Ridgeback in her.

Oh, and your angel Zeus is very proud of you for giving a shelter dog a chance.  It was very hard for me to finally agree to take Emmi, but I know it was the right thing to do.  We often say Trouble speaks to Emmi from the Urn.  Every once in a while Emmi will do something that is so characteristic of Trouble it is almost frightening.

Good job you guys!!

I think it was a little easier for me to adopt after I lost Maggie because I still had Tani at home, and she needed a companion.

I think our departed tripawds are very proud- because we are using the lessons they taught us to love another pup in need.
