Recently we told you about LoveyLoaves, a great organization that hosts Smudgie's Gifts, a fund helping financially distressed pawrents pay for urgent veterinary care (see: http://wp.me/pcAJ7-1lB).

Currently, the good people at LoveyLoaves are raising funds for Riley, who recently lost his leg after surviving a cougar attack! Riley lives in Lake Stevens, Washington.

Please see Riley's story for more details and how you can help this amazing kid in Washington. Thanks for your consideration.

I don't know how I managed to miss her posts or the news but this is the first I've heard of it.  Poor Riley!  I bet that was a terrifying experience.  I keep my 175 lb dog in the house with Sammy my 100 lb dog because we are in bear and cougar country too.  Cattle dogs are so amazing though, there aren't enough good things to say about how smart and loyal and brave they are.

Elizabeth and Sammy

Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in the right front leg 8/23/10,

leg fractured 8/27/10,

leg amputated 8/30/10

I couldn't begin to say how special Sammy is to us.  Living and laughing with and loving this wonderful boy is priceless.

What a trooper! Makes me glad I don't live in Washington anymore, my little guy wouldn't stand up to a cougar or a bear! Of course, we have coyotes, javelinas, and vultures... guess no place is safe, lol!

Hello all,

I hope that Riley is healing and adjusting to his new circumstances. I also hope his pawrents are well.

I am heavily involved in cougar issues in Washington, and was very interested in Riley's case when I heard about it. All the information I could find indicated that the attack was not by a cougar. The description of injuries is consistent with an attack by a dog, not a cougar. The neighbor's dog that was killed months earlier also had signs of a dog attack, not cougar.

Cougars are efficient killers (about 80% success against deer), frequently taking down prey five times their own weight. They nearly always make a neck or head attack, whereas canids attack the legs. Other indicators of the affair say "Not cougar." I have discussed Riley's ordeal with cougar biologists and other experts, all agree that it was probably an attack by a dog. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is required to file a report of any interaction with bears, wolves, or cougars, but no report was filed for Riley, or the other neighbor's dog. Television reporters, however, find a more sensational story to call it a cougar attack, and get increased viewer audience from their mendacity and sloppy reporting. A little panic never hurts ratings.

I'm pleased to find there is a support group for tri-pawed dog owners, and that you are able to help Riley and his family. For years, one of my neighbors had a tri-pawed dog, and it seemed to be a happy critter, out and about, doing dog things. It is right and fitting that these dogs have a loving home and a happy life.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for letting us know, we learn something every day here (except for the part about sensationalism on the news!). We're just glad Riley is on the mend.

Now if you ever need any Tripawd support, you know where to turn! Thanks for visiting.

I have no idea if this is relevant or not (probably not), but several years ago up here where I am my Good Dog Belle was attacked by something. We never saw it. However, the assumption was coyotes since she was attacked from each side (had to be simultaneously) and injured along her shoulders, flanks and rear legs. In our minds, we looked at her injuries and envisioned her running away while a coyote on each side of her jumped at her, biting. Could it have been dogs? Of course. Only problem is we don't have packs of dogs running at large out here. Mostly because of the bears, mountain lions, coyotes, foxes and gigantic owls that will carry off domestic dogs.

Belle spent a lot of time in the hospital getting well, and now when I hear our coyotes singing outside and I see them in the meadow silhouetted in the moonlight, I don't think "romantic western movie" any more. Instead, I think "vicious little s.o.b.'s".
