Because that's what I am.  A sucker for animals.  Driving down my road yesterday morning I pulled in a gravel lot to turn around.  There was a beautiful Lab sitting very proud at the back of a pick up truck.  When I stopped, the dog trotted happily to my car and stood by it.  I rolled down my window, said "hello", and he immediately poked his head in my window and started licking my face.  I got out of my car to pet him and noticed he was dirty, skinny, and had rather large ticks on him.  Oh no, here we go again.  This is how my family ended up with Roxy.  I checked around, no one was his owner.  The lady across the street said he came down the road about 530am.  What could I do?  He was so precious, loving, caring, and lonely.  You could tell he was lonely.  So I took him to my house, tied him up around some trees, gave him food and water and left for work.

I worried about him all day at work, but my mom and aunt checked on him midday and gave him more water.  I spent some time with him yesterday afternoon.  He knows "sit", "off", "give me paw", he's very well behaved.  When he was in my car he laid down the entire time.  Neighbors were setting off bottle rockets, he gave no reaction other than a head turn.  My husband and I were mowing and weed-eating, he watched calmly.  I've called the shelter, I've checked the paper, no one has been looking for him.  I just can't imagine having such an incredible dog and not be missing him.  When I sat in the grass next to him he rolled over next to me, then crawled half in my lap and just relaxed.  He's so beautiful.  But we just can't have another pet.  frown  We've been asking around for someone that would love to have a great companion, I'm trying to get in contact with a friend who has a dog rescue.  But so far he's still tied up to my tree.  I'll post some pictures, hopefully soon.  If any of you want or know someone that would love to have a very charming young guy, let me know!

Awww Leslie, you're not a sucker, you're a caring, compassionate human. How could you say no to that boy? To be greeted with such love...wow!

How about if you just hang on to him "temporarily"? Then that way it wouldn't be like you are adopting him, you're just waiting for his human to show up? (wink wink, nudge nudge 😉

Have you taken him to a vet office that scans for microchips?  It is probably a long shot, seeing as how he is skinny and dirty, but maybe he was microchipped and ran off awhile ago.  The case of the missing beagle I found was his former owners called after I posted signs.  She basically didn't really want him, but wanted to know if it was him.  He had run off several months prior and she got on with her life.  He didn't fit in anymore.

Dogs run usually in ever widening circles when they are lost.  It can be 20 miles in a day, no problems if they are young and healthy.  You might also try craigslist lost and found, and craigslist pets.

Something else, you could run some pictures by the vets in your area, or fax it to them.  Alot of times they recognize the dogs first.  Also, fidofinder.  You can also put up lost dogs info at your local shelter and on petfinder.com.

Hope this helps,

Trust me, I have tried to rationalize keeping him.  He's a great dog.  But our house is so full!  My husband is avoiding him like the plague because he LOVES labs.  He's afraid he'll get attached.  I'm already attached, but how could you not be?  I get attached to every animal I meet.  That's why I don't foster.  I'd love to help in that way, but I'd never be able to let them go.

Elizabeth, thank you for the suggestions.  I don't know why the microchip thing did come to me.  I left my number with our local shelter in case someone calls looking for him.  I'll check the other sites too.

Awwwww!  What a darling!

Leslie, you did the right thing!  Not a sucker at all!  You saved him and whether or not you keep him or not, you did good and should be proud of yourself!

Well, it's official, I'm a foster mom.  I contacted my friend who runs the rescue.  Turns out she doesn't have any room.  She currently has 15 dogs (plus about 10 of her own) all on her own personal property.  So I agreed to be a foster mom until she has room.  She told me to think of a name, so I decided he looks like a Jackson.  I'm taking him to a vets office to have him scanned for a microchip, then if that's unsuccessful I'll be taking him to my friends place this evening to have pictures taken and put up on petfinder.com.  I also have a very vague posting up on craig's list, hoping someone will call and have the perfect description.

Jackson really is an extraordinary dog.  My Mom and aunt live nearby, so they check on him during the day.  They discovered he'll also roll over on command.  Someone really loved this dog, I wish I could find them.  Unfortunately my one male, Dakota, does not like other males.  So Jackson will have to be an outside dog.  I hate that.  I've never had an outside dog.  I feel sorry for dogs that are stuck outside.  But at least he has shelter and a steady supply of food and water.  We have an area on our land, pretty close to the house where two pine trees and a maple make almost a perfect triangle, so he has constant shade too.

Here's hoping we find a terrific home soon!

He's a beauty!  I don't think you're a sucker at all.  I would have brought him with me too, even though we can't have any more dogs either.

I am so glad you are doing this for him.  It seems to be an empidemic right now, and maybe getting worse for the next little while.  Dogs are running loose everywhere I go, with the shelters out of government funds, many are closing.  Many are only taking in owner surrenders, which if an owner is embarrassed they most likely will just turn the dog loose.

I think you are saving his life.  It can take up to a month or two to find a good home, maybe a little longer.  But, with the right advertising he should be a shoe in.  He sounds pretty wonderful, so do you.  Thanks for making the difference in this dogs life 🙂

Oh my gosh, Jackson, you are adorable!!I really hope you find a great home, you would be a great addition to any family!

Sadie is my 9yr old Rott/Shepherd mix. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right scapula 1/28/10. Our brave girl had her amputation 2/13/10 and her last chemotherapy on 6/6/10. Unfortunately, a tumor appeared in her back right leg and on 10/7/2010 Sadie's earthly journey came to an end.  On 10/24/2010 we adopted Ranger, a handsome Rott/Lab mix tripawd (got hit by a car) I think Sadie sent him to us.

Bless you - you are an angel for sweet Jackson!  He is sure to find a good furever home - especially with all that you are doing.  Thank you for taking him in and caring for him until his new home can be found.

Hugs,
