After Murphy sent us four pennies in the last week or two, and after we had cruised the many rescue sites for just the right dog, we thought we had found him. He was a rescue from the storms in Houston and had been transported to a foster home in Seattle. I filled out the application and sent a note to the lady at the rescue. She called me and told me that she did not feel that we were a good fit for a one year old, boisterous Lab cross because we were "too old". At our age, she feels that we "need" a two to four year old mellow, calm dog. I told her that she had obviously never met Murphy!

I just now sent back another email letting her know just exactly what I thought about age discrimination and the thought of someone else telling me what temperament my dog should have. This was an opportunity for a dog who has not had any formal training and was rescued from a high kill shelter to have a loving home with pawrents who are accustomed to those high energy male dogs. I suggested that she call my vet's office and ask them whether they thought we were "too old" to adopt this dog. Then I called the vet's office myself and spoke with the receptionist and told her about it. She was appalled and said she would spread the word through the office that they might be receiving a call from the rescue.

I don't know if anything will come of it, but I do know that at this time both Garry and I are seriously pi$$ed off!!!

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

"Too old"?!? They actually said that? I am so angry! That is crazy-town. Pardon my language but WTF?!? What better home for a puppy or young dog than a home that has pawrents HOME. I am a single "mom" and have a young dog and I know she would thrive better if I was home w/her all day.

Unreal. Well maybe this isn't the pup for you but you can bet that Murphy has instilled a new fire and the next one will be even better and now you guys know you are a bit more ready!

BTW - where in Seattle? I'm flying home sometime soon and I would happily for all "LA Bat Crazy" on her! Jasper could totally take her!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

I don't know where in Seattle. The rescue is actually in Houston, but the foster is in Seattle. They shipped him there. Part of the pretty high adoption fee is to pay for air transport to Seattle.

I haven't heard back from her at all. I did see a picture on their FB page, and unless they have another dog who looks an awful lot like the one we wanted, someone from BC has adopted him. I don't know, though. My thought is that if they knew that there might be a pending adoption yesterday when I talked to her, she should have told me that we were too late, rather than too old.

Too old????? That's just plain wrong! And how dare them take the opportunity away from a fur-baby in need of a loving home! Just another thing wrong with some of these "rescue" groups I've come across. They really do give the many selfless organizations a bad rap.

mad

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

"Anger" really isn't an emotion I visit very often, but I just visited it and I am beyond angry!!!! This INFURIATES me to the point I want to "go postal" on that idiot!! INSANE!!! I cannot wrap my head around this at all!

I don't know how to do all that "social media" stuff, but this needs to "go viral" and I'm serious!!! There is NO way this pitiful excuse for a rescue group should EVER be allowed to have a dog in their care! They would rather see a dog KILLED than adopt to...to what....someone over fifty???

Do ya' think some you g whipper snapper could EVER have dealt with all of Murphy's "challenges"...cared for him with the devotion and commitment you two did!! I am absolutely incredulous!!! I'm old as dirt! If I tried to apply they would probably ask me to go shoot muself as I was taking up valuable oxygen!

Of everything in the world that insensitive brat could have said, that was the worst!! And I'm not like this at all, but this group really needs to be exposed. I always trust that the Universe does a fine job "karma"...but sometimes a little help from humans is okay when dogs lives are at stake!! Besides, thei "high fee" excuse is provably a lie!!

I say release LA ALISON on their a**!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Kathi,

This is just one of the problems I have with rescues......I know there are some rescues that are willing to work with a potential family willing to adopt a dog and give it a great home, but in my experience, not so much. Look at what the one rescue did to Sally a few months back, and the one time several years ago when I wanted to adopt a Newfie here in Maryland, I was told it would take up to 9-10 months so they could do all kinds of investigations, etc. I told the lady in charge that it took way less time to adopt our human daughter so I wasn't interested any longer. This is also another reason that I have forged a good friendship with my local Lab breeders....everyone says to adopt, go to your local shelter, etc., but that has NEVER produced a dog for me, let alone one that I wanted.

I do hope you raised a big stink about this age thing, sounds like discrimination to me. I just think some of these rescues, like in Sally's case and maybe yours, that the regulations they practice are a bit harsh, and they also are on some kind of "power trip".

Ok, I am done my rant, and off my soapbox......I do hope that special pup comes to you, he will fall into your lap when you least expect it, and I know Murphy and Gus will send that absolutely perfect pup.

I totally understand your anger and frustration.  Before hubby and I found Leland we had attempted to adopt from a doberman rescue.  Like you we were denied as potential adopters because our first dog Lucky hadn't been on heartworm prevention.  It didn't matter that we had spent thousands in fixing his knees so he could walk.  I had to email them to find out we were denied because they never contacted us at all after the home evaluation.  I too told them what I thought and that they lost out on an amazing home for one of their dogs.  Their response was that sometimes happens. ..mad

So we purchased Leland and now Lucian from breeders. I refuse to jump through hoops again to be denied again over something trivial.

Hang in there! ! You're not to old to give another pup tons of love and an amazing home!

That is just ridiculous!

Before we adopted Murphy, there was a shelter group who called my vet to check out whether or not Cassie was up to date with vaccines and on frontline & heart guard...then they said that the vet told them that I hadn't bought any heart guard or frontline in over a year.  I was irritated...did they want the whole story?  I had bought a 1 year supply for Cassie & for Taz 2 months before Taz passed away and they were on the same dosage, so I still had some.  Another place said no right away because we were in a mobile home...so, we had a huge field behind us.  But that's all ok, because eventually we found Murphy!

Maybe this one just isn't for you...or, maybe it is and your letter will open their eyes.  But either way, when it's  right, it will work!

Oh my DOG isn't that illegal?  How RUDE! How did they know your age anyways? Just curious.

I would not want to work with any rescue that rude or unprofessional. That's a real good sign that they are not run appropriately and some real whackadoodles are in charge. Sucks because the dogs suffer for their stupidity.

A while back our family doctor was turned down by a rescue because they didn't think his young family was ready for a dog. Can you imagine? Agggh!

Kathi I'm so sorry. The right dog will come along.

WOWZer .. the power of a fired up tripawd nation!!!! I am sipping some cocktail mix (vodka and vodka) and just wanting to go bat crazy on them. Unreal. I cannot believe what goes on.

Jasper was soooooo easy in hindsight and probably not the norm. I drove 2 hours to meet her and they said, write a check and she's yours... no home visit, no landlord note, nothing... Everyone I tell is shocked so I am lucky for sure. But you will find the right pup! That much I do know.

And by the way... we don't see age here so no one is "old" .... maybe seasoned.... 🙂

ALISON...LMAO!!!!! You crack me up! Cocktaill vodka and vodkaclap Yeah, that outta' "season" you up!!

And then we have a family turned down because they are too YOUNG???????

And a dog can be kept in a cage until they kill him, but it's unacceptable to adopt out to a loving forever home because his home is a mobile home??????

And Donna has a supply of heartworm pills and frontline left over from her beloved Taz...but nobody bothered to ask??? Besides, when did it become a LAW that you HAD to give your dogs frontline and heartworm pills?? And Sahana, was there a LAW that Lucky had to be on heartworm pills?
Bonnie...I love your line about it not taking that long to adopt your human daughter! BRILLIANT!

Enjoy your vodka vodka cocktail Alison, and then go Facebooger Viral with this ! Of course, not associating iy with the trilawd community...the Admin Guy may adopt us all out of our "trilawds home".

And yes Kathi, as Donna, Sahana, Alison, Bonnie and I can attest, the right dog will come along.

Wow, what a piece of work that lady is. Some of these rescues are scams too, so if they have another dog that happens to look an awful lot like the one you were thinking about then I'd be wary....it especially seems odd to me that they are flying dogs from Texas to a foster home in Seattle? Unless they are an extremely large national rescue, what kind of rescue has that kind of money?

I adopted Tanner (and Jake too) from a local city run shelter, they didn't even look at my application. I highly recommend looking in places like that, you never know what you may find. They are always happy to adopt a dog out, the fee's are low compared to private run rescues and I find that the dogs are AMAZING (at least mine have been). If you are looking for a certain type of dog, call them and let them know. They'll usually keep your name on a list and you get first dibs. Our local SPCA and our Animal protection officers at the local county shelter both do that and LOTS of pure breed dogs come through their door (that's normally where the private shelters get the dogs from anyway so you get to cut out the middle man and any crazy rescue people too). I have friends who have done this with great results.

I think we all believe in fate here (at least I sure do) and we know that Murphy is working his magic, your job is just to believe in it and when it happens we will all celebrate it!!!!

Whackadoodles! Rene put it perfectly. Unbelievable!!! The rescue that gave Sally the run around last year was the first thing that popped into my mind. Not sure what is wrong with these people, but I think I would steer clear of them. I would find another rescue to work with, but I would forward the videos of your hubby feeding pancakes and artichokes to Murphy and Gus. Show them what to look for in a good home. Your fur baby is out there waiting for you. It will happen! You have the whole Tripawd community behind you all fired up now. Lori, Ty & the gang

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

My goodness I LOVE this group of folks!!  I loved reading everybody's post regarding this topic because it really sheds light that there are a lot of whacky rescues out there.  To hear about other amazing homes being turned down for asinine reasons is quite educational.  What started out as something good for dogs who have had the misfortune of being abused/unwanted has turned into Crazyville!!  Our first dog Lucky came from a shelter (growing up that's where all our dogs had come from).  The only obstacle was I lived across the state line in WV so I had my dad come down to the shelter (couple miles from my childhood home) and do the paperwork because they couldn't adopt out of state.

And back then when we adopted Lucky (June 1997) neither I nor my husband know much about heartworm.  We had never been educated about it by our vet.  We thought it was something that came from dogs getting into dead animal carcuses.  We had no idea that it came from mosquitos.  We did have Lucky tested to make sure he didn't have heartworm periodically throughout his life (he lived to be 12 years old) so we didn't see the need in putting him on heartworm prevention.  To us it was an added cost that wasn't necessary.

Since I had always adopted dogs it was hard for me when our home was turned down by the rescue.  I thought "what is wrong with my home...Lucky was well loved and cared for."  Then after doubting myself I got pi$$ed and thought "what the hell is wrong with your group in not allowing me to adopt a pup.  This would be an amazing home for a dog who had a shi++y life and he would never not be without a loving family."  When I think back to that time it still gets me fired up and that was back in the beginning of 2010.

I know (it happened to me) that when you're denied by a rescue it has the ability to cause one to question themselves and their self worth.  I think those of us in the community have developed a strong sense of self after going through the journey of amputation due to cancer, injury, or illness so we know these reasons for denial are total BS.

I liked Elizabeth's suggestion of going to a shelter and requesting to be notified if a particular breed comes through that you're interested in.  I never thought or knew that a shelter would do that.  I just figured you'd have to keep going through the shelter if you were looking for a particular breed.  For me that would not be good because I'd want to bring all the pups home and would feel guilty for having to leave them behind...sad

So anyway...sending hugs to you all Sally, Alison, Elizabeth, Bonnie, Lori, Pam, Donna, and Rene!!
