I agree with Sahana......What a wonderful group of friends here, and all of you brighten my day everyday I am here. You all make me laugh, and make me cry, but all in a very good way. The friendship, knowledge, and experience, as well as the amazing support here, is like nothing I have ever seen before, and I DO LOVE all of you !!!!

Thanks to all of you. I just found out late yesterday afternoon that the pup we wanted had been adopted by a couple from British Columbia. She sent me back a rather snarky letter saying how awful the dog was when he was in her care and that even her "most experienced" foster brought him back after three hours. I do believe in my heart that he is nothing more than a rambunctious year old Lab who has never had any training. The things she said he got into at her house just screamed "nobody is watching that dog"!

At any rate, he has been adopted by a younger couple with two children. The man is a jogger and the pup will be his jogging partner. I am always happy that a dog like this finds a home where he will be loved and cared for

No more of the small rescues with froot loops for the head honcho. I did contact one of the shelters in Idaho yesterday and found that I had missed out on a year old Lab by a couple of days. She was very understanding about what we were looking for and told me to send in an application with a note that indicated that we wanted a black male Lab. I don't mind a mix, as Murphy certainly was one, but I would like him to look like a Lab.

We have also checked out some of the local breeders, but at this stage of the game, I am unwilling to mortgage the farm to pay for one of the "champion lines" pups that they have on their sites.

And thanks, Sally, for the "over 50" comment. We are a bit past that. LOL!

Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Kathi -

Something else you may want to look for is organizations that raise/train service dogs. My family raises labs for wheel-chair assistance and seizure-response and not every dog is cut out for service. The organization has a list of families who are interested in the dogs and they're usually adopted out around a year if they flunk out.

And to cheer you up, my mom's current dog gave birth to a litter of black lab puppies recently. Here they are:

But wait...we still jave a plsso without waiting a year.

Starting at the top row...counting left to right....the sixth one...the one looking like he want soutta' that drawer.....he's going to flunk the test!! It's obvious! You could NOT find a better home than Kathi and Garry for the cutest "flunkie" in the world!!

Paws crossed!

I WANT THEM ALLLLLLLL!!!!!

Seriously, though, I had wondered about those organizations who breed specifically for service dogs. It is pretty obvious that not every dog is suited for that, and I was curious what happened to the pups who were not right for it. Is there a list of the organizations somewhere?

PUPPIES!!!!!!!! Gosh, look at those faces, I want to smootch them all....and kudo's to that photographer who got 11 puppies to stay in drawers long enough to get a picture. CUTENESS!!

Kathi, it's the same for police dogs too. You could probably reach out to your local state police and see who's in charge of the one's that don't make it through training. I know a lot of places use labs.

My friends who got married last year had a lab that was a service dog that had flunked! Cooper. He was a black lab and just adorable and loving ... really a great dog and companion. Sadly, he lost his life to f'ing hemangiosarcoma at the age of 9 (I think) but he was great!!!

They got him about age 1 and since he was a service dog in training, he was really trained. Cooper was just a love and he was even in their wedding! 🙂

I know you'll find the right dog ... and OMG on the puppies!!!! WOW ... cuteness overload... now I want another one!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Such adorable puppies!! I have a friend looking for a home for an 8 month old Black Lab Pointer mix. Not sure how you would get him to Idaho, but.... Just sayin! Seriously, everyone here has had great ideas. I just started looking on Petfinder and somehow DARYL wound up on my computer screen. He wasn't even posted there, I somehow just wound up on the rescue that had him. Hmmmmm! They are a fairly small rescue, but they were wonderful to work with. We are all rooting for you! Lori, Ty & the gang

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.
