I had not until a rescue forum on FB posted that they were looking for a foster home and that dog was the spitting image of Jasper. So I Googled it and look - could it be? My Mexicali dog is really an Australian Kelpie?

http://en.wikip.....ian_Kelpie

I still like to think she's part Basenji cause I love the breed (and she is God awful to train and stubborn) but she does have a fierce big dog park that she will use on occasion. And she yodels/sings when she is happy to see me but not all the time like a Basneji would.

And if anyone has any tips on how to get her into an airline carrier (a soft-sided one) I would love them. Because I think she WILL fit and she loves her crate but for some reason will not go in this to save her life.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

I have never heard of one until today. The tan and black one does look like Jasper. Does she herd? Let you know when the doorbell or phone rings? Herding breeds are notoriously stubborn. Much harder to train. I took a few nips on the back of the leg before I got her to stop herding me. Lucy was originally gotten to help us bring in our horses. She did not fare well and after being stepped on for the second time, ( by horses, not us) I decided that the cowgirl life was not healthy for her. she does still like to ride around on the Gator. That may also explain Jasper's acute hearing. Herding breeds have great hearing as it is their job to alert you when something is amiss. Just for Lucy those somethings are the shower, vacuum, phone, doorbell, Swiffer, oh and I will have to post a video of her with the hose. Hilarious. On the other hand, along with that stubbornness, they tend to be very smart pups. We already knew that though, didn't we? Love from, Lori and Ty

We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

Alison, yes, I have heard of them, but have never seen one.......the colorization and markings are similar in the one pic to Jasper, but I think this breed is a bit larger......however, being part Kelpie could be a possibility. Have you ever thought about doing one of those canine DNA test kits just for the heck of it ? I know a lot of people, including my vet that have tried them.......they are very interesting.....

Sorry, I definitely cannot help with the carrier thing.......getting my cats into carriers are enough of a nightmare when going to the vet.......and obviously, my Labs would NEVER fit in an airline carrier carry-on, lol !! Someone here can surely help with that one, I'm sure.

Much Love,

My sister's dog is a kelpie mix, 2nd dog Image Enlarger

from right, white blaze down face. She is an extremely smart cow dog albeit a little neurotic. Only about 35 lbs.

Hmmm.... she's probably a mix. I don't know if she herds (she doesn't really have the opportunity) but she does have a serious prey instinct and chase - more than most dogs. And her biking at cars/runners/bikes ... I would love to see Lucy herding you ... too cute!

I should get a DNA test on her. I never did on Shelby. Would/could be fun! Most people just say she's a generic Mexican dog that run the streets down there.

I know - those EARS. They hear EVERYTHING. I burped - loudly - last week and she spooked. I'm not always a lady! 😉

She does bark/alert me when she hears someone coming up the stairs, etc... part of her charm, I guess!

Penny - neurotic is a very good way to describe my 18 pounds of joy!

What struck me the most about the description was the long body, the narrow face and the bushy, low to the ground tail. I worry about that tail when she's pooping. I swear she's going to put her tail in it but so far, so good. But it does sit lower than most dogs. I would love to see her herd cows or sheep. That would be a hoot!

I can kiiiiiinda see the kelpie but in looking at the pic that Penny shared maybe not. As an aside, I wouldn't rely on the DNA tests. A few years ago a couple of members here tried the tests and the results were less than impressive. Maybe the tests have gotten better now but maybe not. Hmmm....

I've heard of Kelpies (and seen lots of them) .... but then I'm in Australia rasberry

They are a very common breed here - temperament wise, they need lots of space and 'work' as they are usually a farm working dog. Lovely dogs - but I would never have one as I don't have space or high enough activity levels to keep them happy. I've had quite a few friends over the years who have had Kelpies or Kelpie x dogs - unfortunately quite a few have had to be rehomed to farms as they just were not happy in urban areas. They often do very well in agility or endurance trials.

Personally I wouldn't bother with a DNA test if you are trying to find out if she has Kelpie in her. The tests are generally quite poor - I've seen some very weird results come back on them.

I've just found a couple of photos of Jasper - she possibly has some Kelpie in her - definitely not pure Kelpie. She's very cute big-grin

Thanks Kirsty for weighing in from down under! smiley I would agree - Jasper is a mix of Kelpie and who the heck knows! She definitely is a working dog and wants to have things to do (her incessant need to chew and move her babies from point A to point B could be like herding). She has such a strong prey instinct - when we are out walking, I have to pick her up to re-direct her focus sometimes. But she isn't as big as the Kelpies I had seen on the internet. Interesting - literally never heard of that breed.

But her prey instinct almost got the better of her this a.m. when we were out at about 5:30 a.m. and I saw out of the corner of my eye something in a yard walking along ... with a big white stripe and Jasper got super alert and let out a low growl. Fearing it was a skunk and I didn't want to be sprayed, I grabbed Jasper and ran to the other side of the street. The skunk or whatever it was didn't follow us. But Jasper was properly distracted for the duration of the walk and kept looking over her shoulder.

After my run, I took her out for a 1/2 mile and she loved it. She's graceful when she runs ... Knowing that she needs activities to keep her mind busy is good ... I figured as much seeing how she 'works' at home moving stuff around.

Thank you everyone ... always a learning process with little Jasper ...

Oh and Lori - LOL @ the "cowgirl life wasn't for Lucy"...

Before Garry retired, he was a high school principal. The school resource officer (who was also a city police officer) had a Kelpie drug dog. One of the smartest dogs I've ever seen. He did have one fault, however. He knew that Garry kept a supply of Yummie Chummies in his desk drawer for when our dogs would visit him. That dog had his own school ID tag with his picture on it and was allowed anywhere in the school. His first stop was always the principal's office, though. Had to get his snack before he went to work.

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Well Kathi, I can see why a Kelpie would be a great drug/police dog! She almost took my arm off tonight going after a neighbors cat. And the scream she made when I wouldn't let her get the cat was like I was skinning her. They are wicked smart dogs and now she will not let it go... good times! It's our new "fun" challenge.

Hi,

Don't know if you would be interested in agility or if you have the time but it is really fun. Good exercise for dog and human. You could find a class somewhere in your area and try it. If she is a working dog you would be amazed how focused they get once they set their energy on running thru a course. I take my Weims thru a course occasionally and they love it. Every size dog can practice on a course.

I've never done that before - Shelby freaked out at an agility course (wouldn't go through the tunnel, etc) and she was a terrier so supposedly also smart!

But I think Jasper might like it. Her prey instinct toward the neighbor's cats is definitely something we need to get under control as I did the "mommy walk of shame" this morning - carrying her kicking and screaming up the stairs to our apt. For 18 pounds, she is amazingly strong when she decides she doesn't want to move.

I definitely am noticing that as Jasper  gets more 'comfortable' in her home, her true personality is coming through and that little timid dog is a distant memory and as much as I adore her new found confidence and independence, I do worry about my pillows, shoes and couch while I am at work. She gets the same 'sparkle' in her eye that Shelby would before I left for work as if to say, "go ahead, go to work, I'll redecorate while you're gone". 🙂

So funny!! I have this picture in my head of you carrying Jasper kicking a screaming up the stairs. She sounds so much like Lucy. If she does not want to go somewhere, she just locks up, digs in her heels and WILL NOT move. And to pillows, shoes etc. You know those pretty little fleece toys I made, I am finding 2 inch long pieces of fleece all over my house. LOL
